XarBat
I have two RAM modules advertised as 1600Mhz CL9. At 1600Mhz I can't overclock the CPU beyond 4.3Ghz; when I turn them down to 1333Mhz, I seem to be able to take the CPU as far as I want as long as it stays under 98 deg. C (won't take it over 4.9Ghz, since at 5Ghz Vcore went slightly over 1.52Volts for a brief moment). Right now I am running it at 4.7Ghz.
EtherealN
CPU speed. I don't quite understand why you would be limited by RAM speed though - just change ratio on the RAM. However, whether you'll get anything extra performance for anything over 4.3GHz depends a lot on the rest of the system and you might want to stay down there anyway just to ensure you don't degrade the livespan of your processor. I would never run a processor anywhere close to 98C even if it survives it for the moment. aceflier
98C is crazy hot if your using a 2500k or 2600k. I run my 2600k at 4.9ghz 24/7. But my temps are never over 73C with water cooling. At 5ghz its up around 75C under full load with prime95. That would be the maximum Id let these chips go on heat. 1.52v is also getting dangerous. I run 4.9ghz with 1.37v. wtfisgoingon
Gotta chime in and say that if your CPU is in the 90's its not going to last very long at all. 90's is *INSANE* shoot for low 70's under full load or you'll be CPU shopping before you know it :) i7-920 @3.8Ghz / MSI X58m / 8GB DDR3 / 2 x HD5770 / Asus-vw226h @1920x1200 / 2x OCZ Vertex 2 80GB SSD's / Win 7-64 / TrackIR 5 / Saitek x52 / Razer BlackWidow Mech Keyboard / Razer Deathadder Stuttering or fps problems? Pyroflash
yeah, ideally you want your processor to run anywhere < 80 C. 98 degress is acceptable only if you are running Prime 95, in stress mode, on a really hot day, in the attic of a house, with no air conditioning(I totally did this, it was cool in the morning so I stuck on Prime 95 to test my new RAM. The only problem was it was my graduation party, and I had left for a couple of hours to join the festivities. A couple of hours later I was mid conversation when it suddenly hit me that my computer was still running P95 in what had now become 90 degree weather). Viper101
Are you running on water cooling or fans? I sure hope you're running ice water through those pipes if you're doing water cooling because that is hot. I wouldn't even think of overclocking that much on air, and I am running 10 fans! XarBat
It only got in the lower 90s when I ran the Intel Burn Test using approx. 7GB of RAM at 4.8 GHZ. When I run DCS A-10C, it is below 60deg C. However, it still got zero errors and a good GFlops count when it got in the 90s.

Never run water through a liquid cooling system. Always, ALWAYS run some form of non-conducting fluid. That way if it leaks, you won't fry your computer. Moa
I had a similar problem where I couldn't run my RAM at full speed. I upgraded my power supply (to a higher rated ultra-quiet Zalman supply) and now run the RAM at its max speed (admittedly only 1066 MHz). Anyway, the change in RAM speed made a huge difference to me. LockOn seems more GPU and memory bus bound (makes sense, it is moving an awful lot of pixels around) than CPU bound. I'd say making your memory faster would probably make the most difference. Since you are able to choose between running your CPU faster and memory faster it would be interesting if you reported your fps (using the fps tool in A-10C, RIGHT CTRL + PAUSE). Then you could see which (CPU or RAM clocking) made the most difference. My money is on the RAM. Make sure you keep all the other parameters (graphics settings) the same. genbrien
I dont know for DCS, but there was a test on Tom's Hardware some weeks ago between different types of ram (from 1600mhz to 2***mhz). In all games there was maybe a huuuuuuge 1-2 fps gain..... So CPU mhz FTW! Dont push Sandy Bridge's VCore over 1.4v, and dont go over 75-80 celcius(except maybe IntelBurnTest) Edited May 31, 2011 by genbrien Do you think that getting 9 women pregnant will get you a baby in 1 month?[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Mobo: Asus P8P67 deluxe Monitor: Lg 22'' 1920*1080 CPU: i7 2600k@ 4.8Ghz +Zalman CNPS9900 max Keyboard: Logitech G15 GPU:GTX 980 Strix Mouse: Sidewinder X8 PSU: Corsair TX750w Gaming Devices: Saytek X52, TrackIr5 RAM: Mushkin 2x4gb ddr3 9-9-9-24 @1600mhz Case: 690 SSD: Intel X25m 80gb
XarBat
It is difficult to believe that you are running an i7 2600k @ 5.0Ghz and staying under 1.4V. My motherboard is bad, but it is not that bad.

My motherboard is bad, but it is not that bad. 4.8ghz@ 1.344v 5ghz was OK with certain game with less than 1.4v but some not, so I lowered it. XarBat
Try Open Hardware Monitor; it records the max voltage. I am at 4.7 GHZ; when I run P95 or IBT, it can vary between 1.37 and 1.47 volts. You have a similiar motherboard to the one I have, do you have LLC on or off?

Thats what limit the voltage's variation.
