Hi all,

Been away for a while and back to DCS agai now. Quick question regarding lights - Which should I use, and when? I also seem to remember one of the not switch on until you hit a certain command...But just can't remember what it was! hope you can help :)

Conure hi thought you where missing from the forums.

Personally I use the formation lights on full and the NAV lights on steady till I am fencing in and then lose the NAV lights and keep formation lights on.

However I do not know if this is the correct procedure but its one that seems most used on MP servers I visit.

Except for the flashers:eek:

somebody correct me but in civil aviation its as follows:

-Position lights ON after APU startup

-Anti collision lights ON before engine startup

-Wheel light to TAXI before taxi

-Strobe (Flash) ON before entering runway

-Wheel light to LAND before take-off

but I dont know about military rules and please somebody guide us when to use flash, when steady and when to use anti collision

This is just my observation from seeing them fly everyday.

Position lights on at APU start. (I have always seen them on flash never steady.)

Wheel light to Taxi after moving.

Anti Collision on when at runway threshold

Wheel light to land when ready for T/O

Once clear of AB air space Formation lights .

A couple of weeks ago some one posted a real good guide as to when and where you use all your lights. I'll have a quick look...

----------------

Yes, here it is:

This is what we came up with at the 77th from the various manuals and checklists, Personally I tend to keep the position lights on steady as it eats frames

Startup:

Position Lights: Flash

Nose Illumination: OFF

Anti Collision: OFF

Bright/Dim: Pilots' call based on time of day, wx, etc.

Nosegear Main headlight: Taxi or OFF

Taxi:

Position Lights: Flash

Nose Illumination: OFF

Anti Collision: OFF

Nosegear Main headlight: Taxi

Takeoff:

Position Lights: Steady

Nose Illumination: OFF

Anti Collision: ON (when entering the runway)

Nosegear Main headlight: LAND

Flight:

Position Lights: steady

Formation Lights- +BRT as needed

Anti Collision: ON

Nose Illumination: OFF except for Air Refueling

Hostile airspace: ALL exterior lights OFF except Formation lights.

Landing: configuration same as Takeoff except as noted:

Anti Collision-OFF upon exiting runway.

Position lights (flash) on once APU powered up

Position lights steady/Anti collision on when taking the active

Landing/Taxi lights are pilots preference daytime and required at night

Formation lights depend on the mission but aren't used much anymore when we fly with NVGs....

This is how the 23rd FG at Moody does it which I'm a part of...

..also, with regards to using the lights , they are controlled by the pinkie(?) switch on the hotas.

The keyboard commands are

ctrl-p = use as per panel settings

shift-p = off

alt-p = default setting

This is from memory, someone will need to fact check that :) ...its in the manual somewhere! :)

Yea, I always wondered what the usage of the pinkie switch is like... I usually just use the toward me and center position to switch off all ext light when fencing in, but never used the forward position...

Nice plane on that gun...

Have you tried control-P (panel settings)? I have had the same problem, but saw the earlier post and thought maybe that could be it.

you have to set HOTAS & light panel

HOTAS switches ON / off / PANEL pref ON
