Anyone been able to get FaceTrackNoIR tracking as good as FreeTrack?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I found out about FaceTrackNoIR yesterday and gave it a try. It's a really amazing program, but I'm having trouble with it. No matter what I do, I just can't get it to the same tracking standards as FreeTrack (which I normally use). I've messed with the curves for quite a while, but to no avail. I don't even know if this is possible at the moment, but has anyone been able to get FaceTrackNoIR tracking as well as FreeTrack tracking?

I've noticed that smoothing slows the tracking down by a huge amount in FTNIR, so I've kept that setting quite low, which obviously makes tracking more jerky, but with FreeTrack my smoothing has been set to 200 for all axes and I've had no problems with slow reponsiveness at all. Also, how important are framerates for FTNIR, because my webcam runs at 30 fps/Hz, but I've read that some guys use 100fps webcams.

Any help would be appreciated. I love FreeTrack, but wearing the damn hat that makes you look like a tard just isn't my thing.

Cheers,

Alexrey

Face tracking is obviously a lot trickier then tracking three dots with known distances between them. First of all make sure your face is clearly visibile for the camera, which means proper light and (if possible) not very cluttered background. It will still require a lot more processing power then Freetrack.

About the "retard" hat, well you don't have to wear a hat, there are other solutions, for example a clip. I don't understand why you would wear a hat you don't like anyway.

lol face tracking is much more stable than dots tracking.

my face never disconnects, while point tracking deppends on angle, ambient light, direct sight to light bulbs, sun, any other stuff

about the retarded hat, I agree with him, and its not about the hat, I believe having to put anything in your head just to play a sim is retarded.

So how'd you get FTNIR working perfectly? What are your settings, curves, tweaks? What did you do basically to answer the question rather than just troll.

I'm asking honestly cos I wouldn't mind getting FTNIR to work just as good as a camera + LED setup where the tracking is precise.

You have to love people like that, it's too easy to hate them.

It is just a lie, I have been trying to get FTNoir to track as good as TrackIR, no luck. It just doesn't compete with TrackIR's perfect functioning, but how could it with such little development when compared.

I sold my TrackIR a few years ago, when I had to give up sim racing.

Now I have been trying to get back into it, but with a lot less funds at my disposal. So I've donated and I'm trying out 1.6 FTNoir.

It would be good to find some discussion on exactly what you spoke of. What Settings, Curves and tweaks are people using to get the best out of it, and what is the real best to expect at this moment in time.

Those questions are how I was lead here by Google, on the search for my discussion on it.

I will post on the Source-forge forum in the FaceTrackNoir section, as we really need a place to discuss this to help move it on. quicker. If there really are people who have this software running as 'StoryBoy' posted about, then it would be of utmost importants to share it, with us and the developers.

Anyways, I only posted as to acknowledge the inaccuracies spoken and to confirm the need for true information on the software.

If Eagle Dynamics supported FreeTrackNoIR, it would be a totally different story, but since they don't it is a hard process to the inexperienced to get the application+webcam+FC2 all working correctly. I've tried hacking at it nearly 5 times and give up every time cause it just does not want to function properly even though I am sure I am probably setting it up wrong.

just put the min/max settings of the filter way up. Mine are at 80 I think.

for the curves, you can edit while in game so it shouldnt take to long to find something that works for you. Just figure out how far you want to turn your head for a 180 turn in game (looking behind you). I generally leave roll and x untouched as I dont need much movement there. zoom, yaw, and pitch are the important ones for me.

I used VFriend's .ini file for a start then just up'd the smoothing and min/max values, then tweaked the curves slightly. granted, its still jittery at times, or loses my face when I turn too far to the left or right, but I can focus on something enough to actually work the switches.

note: I've never used freetrack or trackIR so I guess I cant compare accurately

I got FaceTrackNoiR to work perfectly by massively upgrading my hardware.

FC2 went from 40fps ( settings Medium ) to 120 fps ( settings Max )

FaceTrackNoIR also benefited massively.

If hardware upgrades aren't an option, I did get FTNoIR to work very well using these tips.

# Make sure your face is evenly lit i.e. Left \ Right side not brighter than the other - you get assymetrical responses if you don't.

# obviously, better lighting = better experience, but I could still play in dimlight, I just had to play with the camera contrast\brightness settings until I got a good face lock.

# Play with the filtering ALOT. It took me a while to get the balance between response time and smoothness right. Of course it all changes when you change from night \ day, but it only takes a moment to correct

It depends you have FreeTrack LEDs or FreeTrack reflective material. I use reflective material and it never loses lock (always is visible in camera). Just make them more rounded and they will not disappear even when you turn your head 70 degrees which is far beyond normal rotation :P

I used FaceTrackNoIr 1.6 and my conclusions are it is far behind FreeTrack, especially in stability and quality of movement. If they updated those things, FaceTrack would have great future.

ED finally released something which can be used with FreeTrack, don't know about FaceTrack, however I had to crack newinput.dll which is protected. It will not work in x64 bit, however I used dll from 32 bit IIRC and it worked. Still waiting for official implementation for FreeTrack :(

That all because of NP actions, which make life harder.

The headtracker.dll released by ED works perfectly with Free-Track and FaceTrackNoIR in 64bit as far as I understand it? What you are describing Boberro sounds like the issue I had with Black Shark which is still running in 32 bit.

Oooo do you have link to ready FreeTrack implementation for x64 (BS and LO2)? I found only ready for A-10C.
