Hi all...

I'm about to start my PPL (God help the NE of England:D) at Newcastle airport :pilotfly:

I'd just like to ask if anyone has any tips in regards to

A: not killing myself :music_whistling:

B: getting through it.

I've had a couple hour's experience, a while back, in a Cessna 152 but not in an actual lesson, more of a sightseeing tour with an instructor, with me at the controls. We sure got a good look of the stewards setting up for Newcastle v Everton :D

Also, I'm training on the Piper PA-28-161 Warrior so has anyone got any experience with this aircraft? I hear it's very stable and quite easy to land.

I myself was just about to go for my PPL test before college got in the way. I can't really offer any advice/anecdotes about the Warrior, as I flew a 172. If you don't already know about them, here's a link to the flight training page of the UK division of the Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association: http://www.aopa.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=59&Itemid=66 I'm a member over here on the other side of the pond, and they are a fantastic resource for pilots of all skill and experience levels.

Oh, and remember: keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down!

Tailwinds! :pilotfly:

If you fail at 1 or 2, try not to beat yourself up about it. Depending on your background, the learning curve can be steep. Just remember that it is normal to find a platform in your learning, where no progress seems to be made, just prior to a break throuh. Ignore the little voice telling you you'll never be able to sort out left crosswinds or whatever, and remember to relax and

and it'll sort itself eventually. ;)

If you're the reading kind, the theory will not be a problem. If not, it can seem daunting, but remember: You're reading about aircraft. That's fun, even if done ten o'clock at night the day before an exam on air law. ;)

Yep the metro is right round the corner from the Northumbria flying school. The cost to park there would dwarf the flying costs.:D

Fine... when they let me loose I'll do a touch and go.... just keep your head down :music_whistling:

But seriously I'm doing a few circuit's there so probably get over there in a little while.

Oh and they've just swapped my plane round to a Cessna 152. It's so small you could flip it with a desk fan :D

Don't rush. Not the planning, not the walk-around, not the radio calls. It's really hard to fail for going too slow. For me, the hardest part was the weather and airspace rules-but that's just memorization.

Good luck!

Of course have fun. Thats the first thing. But like said before, go slow. Take your time on your preflight, ALWAYS use your checklist. You want to start good habits before you take your flight exam. Remember, one thing goes wrong.. it could mean the difference between life and death. I have a story my ground school teacher told me..

One of the students went up for their night flying, to bang out the few hours needed, during the run-up the student didnt have the brakes set all the way and the aircraft moved forward and hit the taxi-way light severely damaging the propeller(C-152). Instead of shutting down and checking they went up anyway. Well, they landed and went about their night, without checking the plane and reporting the damage. The next day, one of the kids in my class went up with the same plane. During the day, didnt check the propeller, half assed his preflight, and the instructor didnt realize this either, whether this is true or not, I dont know, this is what I was told. Well he crashed on take off... no just kidding, but it could have happened. the moral of the story, DO NOT!!! HALF ASS FLYING!!! Cars sure, flying. No, you could kill yourself and a lot more people.

Also don't do half-ass driving, you're still moving around a ton and more of metal, but very few realize this...just yesterday I got to see an example of such a behaviour.

But consider this, if you take your time you'll be able to enjoy flying much more once you get off the ground! I envy you a bit! :)

It doesn't quite look like a totally standard METAR, but:

Check this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/METAR#Example_METAR_codes

So, pittsburgh international airport, 9 am 17 minutes 30 seconds UTC/GMT, 091818 I'm not sure about, wind is 5 knots from 150 degrees, 5 miles visibility, and so on. I've never flown in the US (well, as a passenger but not as pilot) so there's some funkiness in there to me, but you should basically be able to just go through your METAR instructions step by step and get the meaning.

I don't ****ing get radio navigation, shoot me now please.

I don't get how VOR works, I don't get how TO/FROM works, I don't get it because this textbook isn't speaking english and it pisses me the **** off.

Pardon my language, I'm just stressed out with this crap. People who wrote this assignment are too lazy to write out "HSI" and put "HI" instead for the sake of confusion.

My advice: Study hard. Try not to make mistakes, but expect to make them and learn from your mistakes.

Chair fly a lot. Sit down and go through a flight from startup, taxi, takeoff, pattern, landing, after landing, parking and shutdown and do the motions - so it's recall training in the actual plane when you're spending your pennies.

Don't let the plane arrive anywhere your brain didn't arrive to 5 minutes earlier.

It's not easy learning to fly and all the book knowledge that comes with it, but that's why it's satisfying as well. Good luck and have fun!

Wow that's some complicated stuff in that article. But I'f you think hard about most of the stuff it does make perfect sense... mostly.

Opening the throttle doesn't necessarily increase airspeed but altitude because the wings are converting the extra energy into altitude. So to gain airspeed not altitude you must counter act the lift created by the wings. Is this right or am I an idiot?
