It seems the unit works fine out of the box and can be mapped in game for all my titles. what about the firmware update i hear so much about??? is it necessary if all seems to work as expected out of the box? No, you don't. But if you want to use you THW to the max, you will need it. Maybe not for DCS:A-10C, but sure for LO, or BS. Imagine you want to assign a sequence of keystrokes to single buton (i.e. your own "programm" for chaff/flare release sequence, or cycle-switching nav/return/bvr/vertical/shlem/a2g modes with single button), or keystroke to axis when it reaches certain value. That all is very easy with T.A.R.G.E.T. And for some even more complicated tasks even T.A.R.G.E.T. is not enouch, it can be accomplished only in scripting language. Moreover, when you assign buttons in game, you will loose it whenever your reinstall game (or move to the other pc). With T.A.R.G.E.T., you just copy&backup your profile. Concerning firmware, I think it is worth to update it. Usually it solves some problems, or adds functionality.

LawnDart
Update firmware to latest. No/fewer issues with new firmware, so don't fear - git 'er done! Agree on all the above re: TARGET. Only game I don't use it for is A-10C (only because it comes pre-mapped for the HW + MFDs). ivanwfr
Good! ...till now, nobody said NO! Absolutely not! as it usually happens. I'm a big fan of TARGET but I don't say everybody should use it. It all depends on what you expect and the Plug-and-play symbiosis between DCS and TMW is indeed an asset. You will know you need scripting when jumping from your stick to the keyboard and back will be irritating, tiresome, boring, ... Till then, keep it simple. TARGET is not simple :joystick: it is like, well ...say an A-10C with less buttons, rather complicated, (...many other qualifying words here). But that's why we're here isn't it?
