Training missions on Steam

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know how to install these training missions properly when BS is set up via Steam?

The current install path was SteamApps/Common/DCS Black Shark. I replaced the training folder in the latter with the new file, but they don't appear at all in the training section from the main menu. Attempting to start them from the Mission menu also gives an exe. error.

The training missions will only work for DCS world. The BS version on steam is the origional BS1. DCS World will only work with BS2. I highly recommend upgrading to to BS2. The AI is better, the graphics are more crisp and streamlined, and it supports the trigger system that is needed for these missions to work properly.

BS2 is available on ED's main page. http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?end_pos=1322&scr=shop&lang=en The BS2 upgrade will not be available on steam.

I have created this thread to collect all feedback, suggestions, and comments in one spot.

My goal is to create an in cockpit training environment to help you understand the systems of the KA-50 Black Shark.

I'm sorry, but these missions will only work for the Black Shark 2 and appear to only work in World 1.2.0 at this point.

*UPDATE* Upon watching a Youtube video of somebody flying my Weapon mission, I will be changing the mission up a bit. Stay tuned for the update! I will be re-recording that one again, hopefully at a higher volume this time.

Current list of training missions: *TIP* It may be necessary to hold down a button such as the ABRIS buttons for the trigger to take affect.

PeterP's main menu integration: http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/173790/ *File contains ALL current training missions*

Abbreviated cold start up http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/144189/

Weapon employment http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/144314/

Countermeasure systems http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/144329/

ABRIS, PVI 800 navigation with autopilot http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/144567/

ABRIS AMMS Overview http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/144661/

ABRIS AMMS Advanced Options http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/173101/

Datalink and Wingmen http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/173789/

I have updated the ReadMe.txt in the training menu mod and will upload it after I have checked all the missions for errors. Below are the instructions for DCS World integration.

DCS: World installation:

Rename the "Training" folder in the mods section for the BS2 module to something else. Example "Training.old". Then just copy the training folder from the zip file to the same location as the old file.

Example Path >> ...\...\DCS World\Mods\aircrafts\Ka-50\Missions\EN

**Known Issues with the missions**

-Narrative and other triggered sound options are not working properly in DCS World *Temporary Fix* http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=91666

-There may be some field of view problems for some users caused by DCS World

-There appears to be a problem with the "Prevent controls Synchronization" trigger at the moment. Any missions such as weapon employment that start in the air, you will need to move your throttle forward before starting so you do not immediately enter the vortex ring situation.

Thank you everybody for your support with these missions. Your feedback is welcome and encouraged to make these even better.

These training missions were mentioned in the news feed of the main site http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/news/ if anybody would like to take a look.

In a somewhat related note, you can also view my A-10C JTAC coordinate training mission http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/99424/

Does the PeterP lot contain all training missions or are there extra ones contained in the list below that?

I left them in case somebody wanted a particular file instead of the entire thing. For example: I am working on the weapon employment mission. When its done, I will update both the pack and the individual file. That way, you don't have to download and install all of them again.

Okay cool. I just noticed a real tiddler of a bug (i.e. very small). The aircraft labels are on in these training missions even though selected off in main options.

Damn this craft is complicated. Lot of reading to do. I managed to shoot something though, which is always a breakthrough.

;)and here is a lot more:

Read also besides the manual this:

DCS: Black Shark...

Technical, Simplified

-Coaxial Rotor Aerodynamics

-Trimming the Ka-50 Black Shark <<<!!!! very important to understand this fully!

-Part 1 - Autopilot <<<this too!

-Part 2 - Autopilot

And when you still have time , read this too:

A Stick and Rudder Man's Guide

to DCS: Black Shark

Here is a useful tweak if you using real rudders:

How to unchain the rudder from trim - solution

Things you want to have some day too:

Could you explain briefly the difference between collective up and throttle up. I get to a point where I need to slow the heli down but still stay in the air. I can use nose up but playing with throttle and collective seem to result in catastrophe.

No - I won't. Maybe others will.

That's why I posted the links - ...you want to know what a RPM governor does.

In a normal flight you don't touch the throttles at all after start-up - the only thing you use is the RPM LOW/HIGH switch at the collective - useful while taxiing and when you need a quick dive.

Nice tip.

RPM Hi/Lo? Is that the same as collective up/down? Or are you talking about free turbine RPM hi/lo?

Okay, found them, should they be clickable?

not at all

you control normally the lift of a helicopter with the rotor blade pitch and and not with the RPM...

That's why you first want to read one of Erik's nice explanations in this post : #97

Its because of the autopilot dampening. You need to trim the helicopter A LOT. "when in doubt, trim, trim and trim again" When you are adjusting heading, altitude whatever maneuver, trim, then trim some more. It takes a while to get used to. Its not like the a10 where you have to use minimal trim inputs.

No, not more missions at the moment. I'm not sure what else to really teach. I covered most of the systems.

I am redoing the Weapon's training mission. I wanted to change the order in which the weapons were being talked about because rockets are such a pain. However, I have decided to keep the order of the training the same. I am however, recording the voice overs again at a higher level for better clarity and fixed a few typos.

Do you mean use the TRIMMER button on the Cyclic Control Stick (CCS) a lot?

Yes. Read the materials PeterP has suggested. It explains in better details about how the trimmer works. But, suffice it to say, When you use the trimmer button, it tells the autopilot to keep these new settings and not try and return to the helicopter to its original state. This explanation is way overly simplified however. SO, get into the habbit of trimming the aircraft a lot. It is also important to have the trimmer reset easily mapped to your hotas. Trimmer reset basically cancels all the trim.

Hi BigFootMSR. Many thanks for your work - much appreciated. Between your tutorials (and PeterPs integration) and 'How to take off and blow up stuff' (http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2626185/) my 'wazzing and zooming':pilotfly: is coming on in leaps and bounds - more bounds than leaps though when I hit the hard stuff!!!

Quick question #1: Do your tutorials work in standalone BS2, as intimated by PeterPs install folder text file? I have tried, but cannot get any text/instructions and voiceovers to work?

Quick question #2: MSR = Mars Sample Return???

I have not done extensive testing on the standalone version since the game is moving toward world. I have updated the missions already with DCS world to iron out some bugs that had popped up. Since its a newer version I cant imagine them working very well on the later installs. I might still have an older version of the training files someplace...

As far as "MSR" Its my secret. Its a good guess though :)

I've more or less mastered the trimmer just through feel and completed 3 manual landings.:) I was being too heavy handed. You need to tug gently in the right direction, then trim and it works best in a route following, altitude hold mode, where other things are stabilised.

BigfootMSR - no problems. Unfortunately I am one of those people that will spend ages trying to get things to work in the standalone, despite them being available and working fine in DCSW...!!! Guess that comes from my old experiences with PC games where ages were spent getting games/sims up and running satisfactorily!

One thing that I think is missing though, and again apologies for expecting too much, is a set of briefing notes in a similar vein to How to take off and blow up stuff. I found it extremely handy to pause, read, unpause and operate the various systems. I have found that on a few occasions I have missed the voiceover instructions as the mission progresses onwards, or would like to be able to repeat an exercise during the same mission, but have nothing to refer to.

Marcos, glad you're starting to get to grips with things. What version are you flying? I found BS2 far superior than 1.02, and the graphic improvements, along with a better FPS (on my system anyway) also aid in not 'chasing the stick'.
