Tailspin45
The exhaust twinkles, probably as a result of an attempt to show smoke puffs. That make sense just at start, but thereafter...? Blue Skies & Tailwinds tailspinstales.blogspot.com
Teeps
I would think it's unburnt fuel igniting as it exits the exhausts, not smoke. Win10 x64, 16 GB RAM, Ryzen 5 1600X @3.60 GHz, 500 GB SSD, GeForce 1080 Ti

SimFreak
IMHO, we shouldn't see anything at 12oclock day time. Just like gun flashes.
Tailspin45
I've never ever seen flames coming from the exhaust of a '51, except at start. You might at night, and you might in a garage, but honestly, how often do we fly indoors? mmaruda
Check out some Reno Air Racing - lots of flames there, but they do run on modified engines, so it might be different.
Tailspin45
Flames in flight, not start? I'm willing to be convinced, but I've been to Reno several times, have hangared with Mustangs, and flown in them and never saw anything coming out of the exhaust except at start and a constant blue flame at night. The twinkling thing I've never seen except in the first few revolutions of the prop on start. Not trying to be argumentative or a know it all, just want this wonderful sim to be the best possible and hope my opinion will cause devs to take a closer look at the issue. Check this video a guy took of a form flight with Chuck Hall and Bill Anders, for example: Blue Skies & Tailwinds tailspinstales.blogspot.com

Weta43
The 'twinkle' is a product of the render. If you slow time right down in sim you'll see that each exhaust port has a slight puff of flame as its valve opens, but the flashes are brief, and the rendered frame rate slower at normal sim speeds than the individual cylinder exhausts, so you only see a sampling of the flames. If your frame rates were in the hundreds, you'd see what appeared to be a constant flame from each port. See this from half way through : Edited May 31, 2012 by Weta43 Cheers. Tailspin45
Regardless of what or why, I'm embarrassed for the devs by it. They've created a masterpiece by any standard, but it has a clear flaw. There's nothing about an engine on a test stand, sitting a hangar, starting up, sucking fuel from a can that is evidence that such occurs in a real aircraft in flight. The fact that the sim may faithfully represent every exhaust stroke is amazing, but there's no way I'd send a FRAPS vid to a Mustang owner with this obvious toy-like visual. I have several friends that fly '51s, and I want to brag about this otherwise amazing piece of work. But i won't send them any video with this anomaly. Until we all have computers that can produce frame rates in the hundreds what exactly is the point, and why are people eager to defend it? Update: discovered that wingmen don't have this flaw. PepeThePilot
I don't care if it is perfect I like the effect. Do not remove it. Although I like the effect as well, I would much rather have ED put it as close to the real/original engine as possible. We can always mod it back if we like :-)
OldCrow47
I don't wish to defend nor attack the flame effect but unless you are very close to the exhaust you shouldn't see it under normal daylight conditions. My opinion, while it is a cool effect to watch, wouldn't the video resources be put to better use somewhere else? Perhaps a little of this effect at engine start then cut it out until light levels are low. But then that takes more code and resources doesn't it? Above all, this is a beta and our devs are just showing off aren't they. Giving you all something pick at. Kind of fun wouldn't you say.
