correct deployment of CBU97

This question concerns the fine detail of deploying a CBU97 correctly - it's not something I haven't practiced or searched for the answer before posting.

OK, so if I aim my CBU97 with the default HOF (1800) by putting the aiming recticle right on the target, the bomb would hit them direct like a normal dumb bomb would.

However the bomb deploys the parachutes, which I know is normal, but they seem to fall a tad short of the target - with mixed results.

My question is - should I be compensating for this and overshooting the target when aiming so the parachutes fall directly upon my target?

Hope this is clear - as I've been practicing and I can't decide which method is reaping the best results.

In my experience (and I'm not claiming I have all the answers here) I find the dive required to use regular CCIP so steep that accuracy is severely limited.

Knowing when to perform the dive, being high enough to dive, finding the target during the dive and getting the pipper on the target are all a complex dance that affects my accuracy.

I have recently experimented with CCIp in 3/9 delivery mode and this has increased the accuracy and effectiveness of my CBU-97s DRAMATICALLY!

I would really recommend giving it a try.

Set the HOF to a lower level (700 ft or above), the default setting is too high in most cases.

As to other issues, such as TigersharkBAS's apparent issue with dive deliveries, you'll have to elaborate before I can offer any advice.

When using CBU-97s (these are the skeets right...anti armour???) I am unable to get the pipper to show on the hud unless I am in like a 45deg+ dive.

Is this simply because of HOF? I use whatever default for the HOF was set (1700ft) and because the dive required is so steep I need to be basically over the target before I commence the dive to avoid losing so much altitude that I get Invalid fusing.

This is the same problem for the friend I fly with. We recently thought we'd try the 3/9 method of delivery and it was a breath of fresh air.

Weird thing is CBU-87 will deploy in CCIP just like any other iron bomb will (ie. relatively shallow dive will bring pipper onto the HUD) but a CBU-97 requires what seems an incredibly steep dive.

I've never thought it was a bug or reported it as one, just always thought I was using them wrong and when I tried 3/9 it was a breathe of fresh air.

Well, without seeing a track of you employing them, I can't really be sure exactly what you're doing wrong.

My guesses, based on common errors, would be that you're either too low, too slow, doing negative G pushovers to get the nose on target or maybe somethign totally random. Or a combination of 2 or more such errors.

Oh and BTW there is nothing wrong with a 45 degree dive, 30 degree dive bomb and 45 degree high altitude dive bomb are the two most common, and accurate, methods of delivering free fall munitions.

Now that I have gotten used to what I was looking at in the animations I've come to realize how amazing a job Ed did to simulate the 97s. Thanks also to the guys who helped set me straight on it. This 700 foot hof will help a bunch of the guys I fly with dial their drops in.

Thanks again guys.
