GBU-38 Alignment

I am heading towards a target bridge, checking the DSMS the GBU's show "RDY". Then nearing the target the GBU's show "ALN RDY". In this state they won't release i.e. it seems they are realigning. Doing a complete 360 degree turn changes the GBU's back to "RDY". Sometimes simply doing a 45 degree turn & then back to track will realign the GBU's. This often has to be done twice en-route to a target. Surely this is not realistic, or is it?

Can anyone explain this? The INS is fully aligned prior to take off.:(

It's realistic.

You align the A-10C's INS prior to take-off. The JDAM has it 's own INS that needs to be satisfactorily aligned prior to drop.

Thanks for that Viper. I do have the INS fully aligned prior to take off. The problem is that initially the GBU's show RDY i.e. aligned & then un-align themselves en-route. The only way to re-align the darn things, is as previously described, which seems odd. But I bow to your much more expert knowledge & will continue to weave about the sky en -route to a target.

The INS system in the JDAM itself degrades over time, requiring re-alignment.
