2) Реагирует ли ГСН ПЗРК на солнце как источник тепла (и если нет, возможно ли реализовать эту очень важную особенность в DCS);

I have 3 questions.

1) How can the F18 / F15 / F14 capture a helicopter hanging in place with a radar from a long distance? (The question looks especially acute after: yesterday I had a situation when the Su27 radar could not take a moving helicopter into radar lock from a distance of 2 kilometers)

2) And at the same time, launch the AIM120, which, after activation, sees a helicopter hanging in place without any problems?

3) this is no longer a question but a statement. I have a strong feeling that the AIM120 missiles are tracking the target over the mountain. And it doesn't sound like a "prediction"

Your helicopter may not be moving doppler wise but your rotor blades have a large signature and are moving.

For the life of me I can't get that link to work, you wanna snip out the relevant bit for me. Its been discussed at length many places before.

The answer is a little nuanced - so, IRL and only 'more or less' because detailed information is not available:

APG-63 with some upgrades (late 80's/90s), the F-18's APG-73 and F-16 APG-68 are capable of correctly tracking a helicopter by the radar return from the spinning rotors.   The RCS is significant (between 2-8 meters squared according to studies), so for something like an F-15 this is detectable quite far.

Newer versions of AIM-7(M+) and AIM-54C are also capable of correctly tracking helicopters in the hover.  And of course, AIM-120.

Older radars like the F-14's and Su-27 (and original APG-63, older versions of APG-66, 65 etc) probably perceive the spinning rotors as a doppler jammer - ie. denial of speed measurement, but they can still tell that there is 'something there'.  Ranging would have to be done using motion.

In DCS, this effect (spinning rotors showing up on radar) is not modeled ... if it is, this would be a recent change.  So then you have to rely on the speed gates of the various radars and missiles, which in DCS work in a simple way:  You're either in, or out - and as the radar gets closer to its target, the speed gate becomes smaller.

Also, there is no speed gate in a 'look up' or co-altitude situation, so a low flying fighter will see even aircraft in hover, if I recall correctly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Those new R-27ER models that came with yesterdays patch are a very nice surprise!

I really like the added detail.

But I am not sure about the texture. They are rather dark and dirty. It looks like it got recovered from a burning weapons depot. R-73 are also quite dark.

In real world images the missiles are usually rather clean and in a very bright white.

ECM pads work in cooperation. One for receive and other for transmit. One pad can not be operational.

That is an intersting design decision, must be quite powerful jammer?

Is there any proof that the R-77 needs to use PDI or other CW illumination when fired?

In STT it produces a launch warning (before the missile has gone active) when ED has moved modern digital actives away from that interpretation

Could it be an obvious datalink signal?

Interesting book, pity its only 92 pages but I will order it.

Given the multi-launch capability you would need two distinct datalink signals, which can probably be distinguished by the pulse intervals from the original search or STT randing pulse.

Is this described in the book?

It discribes the basic principles of operation and history of all modern air launched munitions. It does not go into too much of technical detail as this information isn't openly available. However, given how the AMRAAM and other active missiles guide from a STT condition it makes sense.

This is the same basic principle at work with the AIM-120 & SD-10.

ED since about a year and half ago has decided to go with the interpretation that this M link is either too ambiguous for RWRs to perceive being about them, or well concealed enough in the beam's pulse train.

Now why the difference in DCS?

was this official or an 'it just happened'?  The M link isn't exactly hidden, it's an additional set of pulses embedded in the radar signal.  It seems to typically occupy the guidance signal space.

In any case the 'explanation' isn't always that important, consistency is.

It just happened I'd want to say over almost a year now, it was mentioned in this thread when it did happen.

I was hoping by the time I caught a break from classes ED would've elaborated more on the change but there seems to be no mention of it.

And I agree these things should be consistent across the board.
