Nearly off-topic, but goes here to display some 'quality' journalism:

Swedish military identified and followed two Russian fighter planes flying in international airspace east of the island of Gotland on Monday morning. Two Swedish SU-27 aircraft were scrambled to follow two Russian TU-22 jets flying above southern parts of the Baltic Sea and east of Gotland on Monday morning.

ED, please add a Swedish skin to the Su-27 and correct fighter loadouts for the Tu-22 :D

This was up yesterday on TheLocal.se (an English-language local news portal that operates in many European countrines) here: http://www.thelocal.se/20150831/russian-fighter-jets-spotted-east-of-gotland

They have updated it since then, the correct version appears to be that the Su-27 were escorting the Tu-22M from Kaliningrad back to mainland Russia through international airspace, and JAS-39 aircraft from Götland went up to take a closer look.

Live (at the moment): Tanks vs 'terrorists' - Russian military show RAE-2015 in Tagil

I wish Russian vehicles smoked in DCS as much as they do in real life. They'd be a lot easier to spot.

It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm

Eurofighter welcomes the agreement between Italy and Kuwait for the supply of 28 Eur

goodwp.com_24211.jpg

The Eurofighter Consortium today welcomes the State of Kuwait as a new member of the Eurofighter community.

This new international success follows an order from the Sultanate of Oman for 12 aircraft in December 2012 and it is a further evidence of growing interest in the Eurofighter Typhoon across the globe and in the Gulf Region in particular with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman who have already ordered this combat aircraft.

On behalf of the consortium and its Eurofighter Partner Companies (EPC) the CEO of Eurofighter, Alberto Gutierrez, said: “This new agreement is the confirmation of the superiority of the Eurofighter over its competitors and will provide a great opportunity for further Eurofighter orders. We are delighted to welcome Kuwait as the newest member of our Eurofighter Typhoon family. The Eurofighter is already proven and trusted by six nations to perform in all operational environments.”

With Kuwait, the Eurofighter Typhoon confirms its role as Europe’s largest military collaborative programme with a total of 599 aircraft committed. It provides leading-edge technologies and strengthens Europe’s defence industry in international competition. More than 100,000 jobs in 400 supplier companies are involved in this four-nation programme and deliver significant contributions.

Since entry into service of the first Eurofighter Typhoon at the end of 2003, 444 aircraft have been delivered to six nations: Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Austria and Saudi Arabia. In December 2012, Oman became the seventh customer and ordered a total of twelve aircraft. Eurofighter Typhoon is currently in service at 22 operational units and up to now, the whole fleet has completed more than 300,000 flying hours worldwide.

Official: Russian Air Force to conduct air strikes against ISIS in Syria

A digest I put together from five different sources (RF, US & UK):

The atmosphere between the Russian military and its Western counterparts operating in the region appears to be largely collaborative according to both sides.

As of today the fighting force consists of four Su-34 in Latakia, Syria. 600 personnel are in the base as well, presumably troops to protect the base plus air and ground crew to support operations.

The Russian parliament's approval of the operation comes less than 12 hours after French Foreign Minister L. Fabius urged Russia to commit an aerial force to fight ISIS on the sidelines of the UN GA meeting.

According to Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko, the mission will be strictly to provide close air support coordinated with the regular Syrian Army. No ground forces will be committed.

Russian Air Force air strikes in Syria

There have been multiple reports stating that Russian Air Force attacked only anti-government but non-ISIS fighters. Any details on that?

These are just rumours, according to both the Russian ASF and the USAF.

See here (Source):

Russia’s Aerospace Force did not deliver airstrikes at any groupings of the Syrian opposition supported by the US, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force in charge of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, General Robert Otto said on Thursday as he met with a small group or reporters, including TASS, at a Defense Writers Group breakfast.

Since no such bombings took place, a question on what steps the US should take in case such situations occur is hypothetical, he indicated.

"I think that is still being worked through," he said. "It hasn't happened, and so it's a what if at this point. And I think that commanders on the ground are working through that issue right now."

According to the Russian MoD, the United States has informed it the areas the Russian AS Forces are operating are not occupied by Syrian opposition forces, only IS terrorists. (Source)

If the reports were untrue the US DoD would have been quick to attack it, which it didn't.

Found this, any truth?

-3 October 12:08, a Russian aircraft crossed Turkish border at Hatay/Yayladağı while conducting bombing operations at Yamadiya. Aircraft was intercepted by two F-16s and locked on by radar, but was not shot down as Russian aircraft retreated back to Syrian side of the border.

EDIT: According to military sources, aircraft was not using IFF but identified as Su-30 type which is only used by Russian air force, and rechecked as not being Su-24 or MiG-29 types Syria uses. Aircraft strayed several hundred meters into Turkish side, Russians claim it happened due to "navigational error".

Turkish Ministry of Foreign affairs called Russia's ambassador and strongly protested: "We demanded to avoid reccurance of such intrusions, and Russian Federation will be responsible for any undesirable event that may occur, and reminded the current Turkish rule of engagement that any military asset that approaches within 5 miles of Turkish border from Syria will be regarded as a threat."

-4 October, Turkish Armed Forces daily events report:

Air force command:

Along the Turkish-Syria border CAP mission is conducted with 10 F-16 aircraft. During this mission, two of our F-16s were threatened by maintaining radar lock for a total of 5 minutes 40 seconds, by a MiG-29 aircraft *whose nationality cannot be identified*.

Regarding both events President Davutoğlu said today (translates as):

"We warned Russia through diplomatic channels, to not interfere with Turkish border affairs. Our rules of engagement are clear and applies to everyone and TSK is instructed as such. ... We, at first, warn anyone who crosses our borders in a friendly manner, but we dont recommend anyone, friend or foe, to cross our borders."

Russian response was throughly diplomatic;

"We will have to verify the data given to our Ankara ambassador, we don't think Turkish-Russian relationship will be shaken by our air operations as our mutually benefical relationship is based on solid grounds."

It's only TASS though. What I'm referring to is: the locations of airstrikes (at least the initial ones) don't coincide with the area maps showing IS-controlled territories.

I threw these locations on Google, there are recent articles mentioning IS presence in the Homs province (example).

Ltamenah has no IS there by the looks of it indeed, and it was harder to find anything on - mostly because of variations in spelling, the most common being Lataminah. What I found suggests the forces operating there besides the Syrian Army are Jaish al-Fatah. This, in turn, has strong links to the Al Nusra front (source 1) (source 2), commonly associated with Al Qaeda in Syria (Wikipedia).

In other words: are they IS? Indeed no. Are they terrorists? That is up to one's definition.

That being said we're turning the News thread into discussion, sorry about that :)
