Graphics Settings List: CPU v GPU

Recommended Posts

Seems I find little tid-bits here and there on the forums about which settings rely on GPU v CPU- but not for all. Could a brilliant and informed contributor let us know which settings rely on CPU or GPU (which one predominates)???

It seems, from forum feedback, that my CPU may be the bottleneck and it appears I have available overhead with my GPU (example: I can up scenes and textures from MED to HIGH with ZERO FPS hit…but get low FPS during many highly populated missions, esp. the campaign). Just trying to reduce load on CPU as much as possible since this thing won't use multicore or xfire to help out…

AFAIK the only 'setting' that will use more CPU that GPU is civilian traffic. And even that i'm unsure of.

The CPU gets hammered by all the AI logic and numerous calculations required in a complex sim. No settings can influence that.

i5-3570K @ 4.5 Ghz, Asus P8Z77-V, 8 GB DDR3, 1.5GB GTX 480 (EVGA, superclocked), SSD, 2 x 1680x1050, x-fi extreme music.

Well thats discouraging - but thanks anyway. I don't really get increased FPS in campaign by turning off civ traffic. Guess the CPU is too busy with other things to even notice…recommended CPU spec is "AMD Phenom X3 8750 or better" - mine is certainly better!

I just don't get it ……what a shame.

I read something like that about Shadows, that one should turn them on medium or high. Can someone confirm/deny this?

Also I have everything on low and still my FPS suck. Is turning on Window mode also bad for FPS? I turned this on because of crashes in MP+Alt Tab.

I don't have my specs in my head but it should be Phenom II 940 @3ghz,8GB Ram & ATI 4890 HD. Not sure right now. In the mission Trax Dogfight_V4.9b I went as low as 3fps.. Something is not right here. :)

Sorry for engrish.

Don't get caught in this "recommended" phrase when buying a computer game/sim. Even high end systems can't run some games decently when they are released although the recommended CPU spec is way lower then that system. It's a major rule which i learned through the years. Sometimes (mostly) you even have to wait a CPU generation or two before you can.

Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600. Monitors: LG 27GL850-B27 2560x1440 + Samsung SyncMaster 2443 1920x1200, HOTAS: Warthog with Virpil WarBRD base, MFG Crosswind combat pedals, TrackIR4, Rift-S.

Personal Wish List: A6 Intruder, Vietnam theater, decent ATC module, better VR performance!

SLI works, running dual GTX 580 without a problem :)

Yeh the sim runs but have you checked to see if both VGA cards are running in unison (i.e. equal load distribution)? You'll find they aren't.

Thanks all - I got a 20% boost after updating to 1.2.1.6192 (or whatever is most recent) - one more improvement like that and it will be playable 95% of the time …seems like theres room for ED to improve so I will hold my breath.

That´s why I never have and never will buy a new "recommended" PC. I always put all parts together by my own and built them together by my own. A day in a PC shop makes also fun...ok...the wife´s exploding when I get home, because I´ve could have "waste" the money for decoration or flowers...but that blast at least worth it :D

That would be really interesting to know. I think in Arma turning shadows to high passes the load from the cpu to the gpu, making the game faster if the right comnbination of cpu/gpu. Perhaps with shadows, water and other settings happens the same?

After quantifying carefully, I notice a ~1.5 FPS hit when upping Shadows from LO to either MED or HI (didn't matter which at that point). Cockpit shadows didn't really exacerbate that hit to a noticable degree...so I just now have Shadows HI with cockpit shadows enabled. Lose about 2 FPS but worth it, I think. Definitely did NOT gain.

Water hits me hard for about 3 FPS (LO TO MED) and 4 FPS (LO to HI).

Also, on another note, I've overclocked my CPU even further to 3.9GHz and noticed no change in FPS. Guess I'm just maxed out at the CPU...it's not even that old!!

Try turning CPU Core Parking to Off and (NVidia users) turning Thread Optimisation to Off as well

Don't know if AMD/ATI VGA's have a similar (Thread Optimisation) function

I have a 27" 2012 top spec iMac with 3.4/3.9ghz i7 and a Geforce 680MX running at 2560x1440.

I bought Track Ir 5 a couple of day ago, previously for the last year (and on my old windows machine i7 2.8ghz/ATI 7850 2gig) had been using Freetrack.

The switch alone to Track ir made my FPS go through the roof (60+)

I generally roll on the high preset then turn down Scenes to medium and shadows to medium.

NO AA, no MSAA or AA on reflections. No mirrors, No tree shadows and make sure the cockpit displays are set to 256 (cockpit displays I think take the most out of performance for me)

Useless information for all of you i'm sure but it's a bit of a revilation, now my game finally looks like the promotional training videos on Youtube :)
