Changes on SA-11 BUK

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Somebody told me that the behaviour of the SA-11 BUK changed with the latest patch.

In the previouse version if you destroyed the BUK-SR the BUK-LN only attacked the actual locked target. A new taget was ignored.

Now the BUK-LN can attack without BUK-SR and the Su-25 can not make a SEAD strike because there is no Radarspike anymore.

Is this object on change or is this the new/real/fix behaviour now?

I asked the same question internally before 1.2.1 release as I also had noticed the new SA-11 behavior. The official answer is- no answer yet. Hopefully I will get an answer that I can share eventually.

Use SA-6s for now, if you need a decently capable missile system that becomes disabled with the destruction of its search/track radar.

The behaviour is realistic in that they are able to autonomously engage, obviously at a reduced range as per their onboard systems, consisting of the following:

The radar fitted to each TELAR is referred to as the 'Fire Dome' by NATO, it is a monopulse type radar and can begin tracking at the missile's maximum range (32 km/20 mi) with altitude restrictions of 15 metres - 20m. It can guide up to three missiles against a single target. An optical tracking system with laser rangefinder can be fitted for passive tracking of the target. The 9K37 system can also utilise the same 1S91 Straight Flush 25 kW G/H band continuous wave radar as the 3M9 Kub system.

Further hereto, the the Fire Dome Radar has a limited (120° sector FOV/Elevation of 6° to 7° FOV/Range 20 miles) search and acquisition capability, a tracking capability and CW illumination for terminal guidance of the semi-active homing SAM seekers.

The issue currently surmised/not modelled is the acquisition of targets by the TELAR's in the absence of the Search Radar due to destruction etc etc. The TELAR's will then be reliant on some type of datalink to be fed the relevant targeting data, via EWR or another search radar. At present that is not the case.

In conclusion, the behaviour In-SIM is accordingly correct, but not 100% so. Two problems I can foresee:

1 - No supplementary targeting Radar to facilitate target acquisition by the TELAR's.

2 - TELAR's might be engaging out-with their restrictions as mentioned above, ie 120° sector FOV/Elevation of 6° to 7° FOV/Range 20 miles. I have not tested this so do not take my word for it.

In any event, definitely a step in the right direction. And yeah, you will get a radar spike (or should) just prior to launch or at launch when the TELAR lights you up due to Fire Dome.

I think the FOV is at least partially modeled. just did a test and wondered why it did not engage me.

Just had a look in the mission and i attacked from a angle of more then 60° off the left of the launcher.

IE outside its FOV.

Lets hope ED keeps updating the systems behavior till they nailed it.

Not only good for realism but it also makes it more of a challenge to engage.

Yet also opens possibilities of "safely" engaging it by using out of FOV aspects.

Good times ahead?

Yup, we were all shocked on Going Ugly server today...

...and then, two launchers I moved to the woods from their original site, cause their SR was destroyed, just at one moment engaged and torn to pieces some Thunderbolts...

Actually, as far as I know, the only pilots ever shot down by the SA-11 were Russian.
