When it's snowing....

Recommended Posts

in p-51 & DCS world, does the land become covered with a white mantle ?

If fog / mist represented in DCS World?

Does the temperature affect aircraft operations? Are the rws contaminated by water / snow when there is pecipitation?

Sorry for the picky questions .... :-)

Snow does not build up as it snows, but there are winter ground textures with a bit of snow.

Yes, there is fog.

Not that I have noticed.. And no, there's no build up of snow or water on the runway. Would be nice for future versions though.

I can confirm that ambient temperature does have a significant effect on aircraft performance in DCS based on the following test using the A-10C. the V and M listed below are at max speed after 6 minutes of flight at an altitude of 25 m with 100% fuel at takeoff, clean pylons, and max throttle. Sorry I couldn't run these tests on the P-51, but this proves that it will also be affected by the environment. Lower temperatures should improve the engine performance, but they will also increase drag on the propeller because of the increasing blade tip Mach number.

Variation of temperature at constant pressure.

Test 1:

p = 1.01325*10^5 N/m^2

T = 323 K

V = 162.5 m/s

M = 0.451

Test 2:

p = 1.01325*10^5 N/m^2

T = 223 K

V = 182.8 m/s

M = 0.611

Variation of pressure at constant temperature.

Test 1:

p = 9.59921*10^4 N/m^2

T = 273 K

V = 184.7 m/s

M = 0.558

Test 2:

p = 1.05325*10^5 N/m^2

T = 273 K

V = 184.4 m/s

M = 0.557

It's great to know DCS has that kind of detail.

Isn't it, though! Yesterday, a friend and I were struggling to start our P-51s, and at one point he starting cursing. I laughed and pointed out that this sim is so authentic that even the historical pilot response is featured. [g]

Not visually, but braking performance is affected considerably.

Ah! Ok! That's good to know, and enough for me... Whow!

DCS P-51 will probably be my first incursion into the military world, just for the sake of flying a realistic prop aircraft :-)
