What?! Infantry don't don IR Fatigues, put cam paint on, sneak into a position over a week, dig in to stage 3, refresh local tree bits daily, talk in bastardised sign language, develop track plans for walking like a drunkard, observe radio silence (after carrying a pornstars lifetime supply of batteries) and then put LCD diamonds all over their position so aircraft can find them? I told the Lieu-y he was doing' it all wrong! So should Christmas and war be considered as entirely separate events then?

I find fiddling with the gain and levels on the FLIR helps a lot - Gain up two steps, levels down two steps, and vehicles seem to pop out a good deal more. The video controls are the high-number OSBs in the upper left.

 

Also, just keeping your head out of the cockpit and looking around helps a lot (I'm trying to do this more in general). Not even so much so you'll see the targets directly, but so that you'll have a much better feel for the battlefield and where you should search and where you've already covered. I think it's a lot easier to use the HUD cursor to SPI-ify a curious spot on the ground in front of you and then lock the TPG to it, instead of just orbiting and slewing around while you unwittingly lose track of where you're actually looking.

 

Finally, I suggest binding something to easily control the zoom (I use a HOTAS rotary), so you can quickly peer out the window at an area where you think they might be hiding and see for yourself. In the same vein, I guess you could justify taking a quick look at the F10 map, since in real life a JTAC or wingman could give you much more detail.

 

All that said, I'm still pretty crappy at finding them. Ralph2 is right, those little guys down there are not messing around. But wouldn't you rather go up against pros?

 

Right now, though, I think a few of the landmarks that help you find targets aren't visible from far enough away, specifically roads and rivers. You can kinda puzzle out where they are from a distance, but but when you're about a dozen miles off at your IP, thinking, "Okaay, they're just south of the north-most branch of the second fork in the river where it splits in three," all you can see of the river is a strip of subtly different green, functionally indistinguishable from the border between two farms or something, and it's effectively lost from view.

The human visual system is really good at picking out edges and other long, thin details (seeing the Great Wall of China from space, etc.) and I know when I'm up in a plane at those kinds of altitudes I can easily see roads and rivers almost to the horizon.

Maybe I should give that view distance mod a try on 1.2.1 or play with graphics.cfg...

I am not sure about the SU 25 T as I havent tried it, but you could also get your wingmans target, you can also get targets from others as long you are linked in the sadl network and they are broadcasting their SPI. It doesnt show it as targets though, but you can see their SPI which can be a good help

I find that I find them easy when I fly low. :music_whistling: Of course they find me too.

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

Incorrect in this instance - it is your Wingman designating targets, provided by the mission builder, done as per the following explanation:

 

 

 

1 - Open the mission you want to add targeting coordinates to in the mission editor, select your wingman aircraft and select waypoint closest to the group of targets you wish him to designate.

 

2 - Once waypoint selected, click the 'Add' tab in Advanced Waypoint Properties.

 

3 - Select the 'Perform task' function and further select the 'Attack Group' function, keeping in mind to choose the specific group you wish wingman to target as well as the weapons you want him to employ.

 

4 - Confirm target designation/command with the Red Triangle that appears on the Vehicle Group so selected.

 

5 - Save mission and Fly.

 

6 - Targets will be designated with a Green Diamond in your/Player HUD only once your Wingman actually spots the Ground Units (distance/time depending on skill level set).

Seems that way. There's a 'Search then Engage in Zone' task that also serves the purpose that Viper mentioned.

 

So I guess this auto-target sharing and HUD integration facility is part of the Su-25T's repertoire in real life? Damn useful ability if that is the case. Makes things way easier. If you want to see the dfference, try this ad-hoc adaption of Camp Yankee, with the sides reversed (the voices as still American as I couldn't figure how to change that).

For the Hog there are many ways of finding targets.. but it massively depends upon mission design.

 

AFAC, JTAC and the real ways pilots find targets the majority of the time. Or via detailed mission briefing.

 

I'd imagine eye-balling targets, either with the naked eye or pod is unusual.

The first time I did a mission with real targets and real threats and without a JTAC beaming coordinates to my TAD I found out quickly that burying my head in the TGP was pretty pointless. I look out of the cockpit, use reference points to place markpoints on the TAD then if I get one of those scripted radio calls in some missions that tell you relative position you can use that to make a rough bearing for either slewing over the TGP or just giving yourself something on your hud to guide you in for a eyeball pass.

 

I also ended up doing one of those tweaks to the files to increase max zoom to simulate having Binos.

 

Overall I have found that its not the TGP or the Mavericks or the GBUs that have made A-10 fun, but the classic problem of finding targets with my eyes and flying myself in on them without losing sight or screwing up my approach.

 

Really its this kind of stuff that makes the A-10 into the last real hands on fighter in the American fixed wing arsenal.

 

But yea, I'd say don't over emphasize the tech too much. A-10As killed lots of stuff long before FLIR came along for them. Some missions are clearly designed to utilize the high tech C model stuff, but I've found lots of my favourite missions tend to emphasize more classic A model style missions which just challenges the pilot in me. Its something that takes more practice really than mastering the basic principles of SOI/SPI flow functionality.
