I'm curious to know, from a mission maker's perspective, what people prefer in regards to Radio frequency setup when flying missions.

Option 1:

  • AWACS & Tanker on one VHF AM frequency. (i.e AM 152)
  • Player's flight & all combat & AFAC flights on another UHF AM frequency (i.e AM 277)
  • Ground JTACs all on one frequency (i.e AM 278 or FM where applicable)

Option 2:

  • AWACS & Tanker on one VHF AM frequency. (i.e AM 152)
  • Player's flight & all combat & AFAC flights on another UHF AM frequency (i.e AM 277)
  • Ground JTACs all on independent VHF FM & UHF AM frequencies (i.e eyeball on AM 278, pointer on AM 279, etc. or FM where applicable)

Option 3:

  • AWACS & Tanker on one VHF AM frequency. (i.e AM 152)
  • Player's flight on another UHF AM frequency (i.e AM 251)
  • All combat & AFAC flights on another UHF AM frequency (i.e AM 277)
  • Ground JTACs all on independent VHF FM & UHF AM frequencies (i.e eyeball on AM 278, pointer on AM 279, etc. or FM where applicable)

Option 4:

  • All flights & JTACS on independent frequencies

Option 5:

  • Some other setup.. please explain.

Personally Option 2 is my preferred system. Only having to alter the radio to contact individual JTAC and airfields. Whilst allowing you to hear all activity while in combat. The disadvantage is the radio chatter can be a bit too much.

I'm very curious to know what setup you prefer in your missions.

Cheers Tommy.

Over 50 reads and two votes.. I'm surprised, i expected folks to have an opinion on this.

I prefer a realistic setup. So each flight communicates appropriately on their own channel. There is a general channel for communication between flights (i.e. "AWACS" channel). And seperate frequencies for unique assets like JTAC or tankers. If a mission get's big enough, I would support grouping tactical assets on to different AM frequencies to declutter.

My preferred idea (needs a lot of switching to be fair.)

Tanker on it's own freq VHF AM. Prefer to keep it separate

AWACS on a "common" frequency. VHF AM Everybody monitor

Each (playable) flight on different UHF

Each JTAC on their own frequency usually FM

AI flights on AWACS frequency. (Possibly not realistic but the engaging calls can be useful.)

Hope this makes sense.

Hmm I've never used 'simplified radios'... not really sure how that works. (Playing since day1 of the beta release)

So if i make a missions with numerous supporting AFAC, SEAD, CAS, AWACS etc flights do you just hear the whole lot the entire time? If so i guess that would be kind of similar to Option 1.

AI flights?... how are they different from 'each flight' mentioned above? don't quite understand.

Thanks

I agree with you. Option 2 saves time as well.

Option 5 here:

AWACS & Tanker on one VHF AM frequency. (e.g AM 152)

Player's flight on another UHF AM frequency (e.g. AM 251)

All combat flights on another VHF AM frequency (e.g. AM 132)

Ground JTACs & AFAC flights all on independent VHF FM (or UHF AM) frequencies (e.g. eyeball on AM 278, pointer on AM 279, etc. or FM where applicable)

Essentially this is the Georgian Hammer Campaign convention. It makes sense to me: there are three radios, I'll have the UHF radio tuned to my flight, switch the VHF AM radio between AWACS and other combat flights to maintain a picture of the battle and select a JTAC / AFAC on the third radio (VHF FM) as per mission demands.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I like. :)

However, FM does have reduced range, so i'm not sure it would be a good idea to have AFAC on it.

Therefore the UHF AM option. So we might put all JTACs on VHF FM freqs and AFACs on separate UHF AM freqs.

I would hope the mission designers would pick a system that suits the needs of the mission and not just stick to some "this is how it must be done" kind of system. In a small mission I would prefer having everything set up so that you don't need to tune radios at all except maybe for the tanker if it's MP mission as there's just no need to listen in when someone is trying to get filled up. If the frequencies get crowded, then I'd like to have more frequencies used to de-clutter the airwaves. The basic principle would be to maximize information available to player without overloading him and minimize the need to tune radios. Make it as easy and efficient as possible. The system Jona described sounds sound to me for a typical mission.

My preference

1. Tanker on own VHF AM freq

2. AWACS on own UHF freq

3. Players & MP flights on own VHF/UHF freq. (mainly for discreet Air to Air freq for TARS players).

4. AI CAP/ESCORT. Flights on AWACS freq. Other aircraft not involved directly with Players flight on own freq. (will switch them to Players freq if relevant using action 'switch freq')

5. AFACS on Own VHF or UHF AM freq especially predator which doesn't have FM radios.

6. Ground based FACs on own FM freq always.

The great thing is that it is possible to get AWACS & even AI flights to 'switch freq' to the Players/MP discreet air to air freq if the situation warrants it using triggers.

I would however like the option of being able to silence AI navigation calls only leaving other engaging calls available to be heard. I find them unrealistic and pretty pointless.

  • 10 years later...

Each flight of 4 or so aircraft on each channel...so if you have a strike package of say 12 aircraft in 3 flights of 4 aircraft. there will be 3 frequencies. then seperate frequencies for AWACS, JTAC etc. Im surprised aircraft dont all have 3 radios. 1 for flight, 1 for guard and a 3rd for comms to other flights/jtac etc.
