I just purchased this game via steam and I'm working on familiarizing myself with the control scheme, so far I'm loving it.

My only problem is trying to utilize the camera. Using the number pad just doesn't work that well for me. Maybe this is a simple fix that I'm unaware of, but if someone could suggest some view alternatives using the mouse, maybe one that would allow the user to look around by pushing the edge of the screen with the cursor, it would be much appreciated.

I haven't been able to adjust the control options in my favor, but we all have those 'oh' moments when someone else points out an easy fix.

Much appreciated :pilotfly:

Hi there and welcome to DCS!

Just to clarify this, you are flying without a Joystick at all only with Keyboard&Mouse?

When I started before buying a TrackIR i just put the in cockpit view on my POV hat without modifiers.

Most persons here are using TrackIR. Its not cheap but its the best solution in my Opinion.

You can also try FaceTrackNoIR if you own a webcam.

Or Freetrack, a DIY TrackIR.

I tried everything- FacetracknoIR wasnt good enough for me. I used Freetrack for over 3 months with a selfmade hat with 3 IR Led's and my IR-modded webcam. It was good after tuning it, but it wasn't as smooth as TrackIR and i had to darken my room

Now i bought TrackIR5- its faster, smoother and easier than my Freetrack build.

Well with most games a keyboard/mouse have proven more than sufficient, and sometimes preferable over a joystick configuration (which I do not have a joystick at this time). Though I'm considering trying out a xbox controller and seeing how that pans out as an alternative.

TrackIR isn't in my price range unfortunately. I only need an option that either lets me edge-scroll the screen, or allows me to hold a button on the mouse to look around. Everything else seems to work alright, I just loathe the number pad view options.

Well the xbox 360 controller doesn't work too badly, the D-pad makes for an alright view shift. Thanks for the suggestions, in the future I will consider TrackIR if I can find a decent deal.

I don't want to tell you how to play your games, but please for the love of flightsim's try a joystick! :)

I am using this cheap thing http://www.thrustmaster.com/products/tflight-stick-x and have everything like TMS/China etc. with modifiers over the POV hat.

TrackIR is wonderful and I can't imagine playing without it ever again. But if I had to decide between 'my precious' and the joystick... Looking around is good, but steering is better. :3

Really hope i am able to convert you here... =)

Not for nothing, but this isn't "most games." And I don't know of any flight simulator released in the last 20 years where KB/M would be "preferable over a joystick" or HOTAS. Sure, it isn't required, and you are clearly free to do as you please, and you will definitely need to use the keyboard a bit if you don't have a full HOTAS setup anyway, but the difference between flying with a stick or KB/M is akin to the difference between being immersed in the sim or practicing your typing.

edit: All my opinion, of course, and predicated on the assumption that you are in SIM mode, not GAME mode.

Hi,

If you can't afford a TIR like me, I would strongly recommend you to use Freetrack, I've played with my POV hat on my joystick at the start, but it's just unplayable, you miss the point of the sim. It's alright when you learn and you're just flying, but in combat, you'll quickly reach the limit of the POV. It's too slow and inaccurate!

My Freetrack device cost me around 10$ and a lot of time to tweak the **** out the game to get it working, I've to admitt that it can be a pain in the arse to have it working. :( But it's better than nothing, the Headtracking changes radically the gameplay.

Regards.

if your mouse has more than 3 buttons you can just map the LCtrl+C to one of them.

With that, you can switch between "clicking" and "viewing" mode of the mouse.

For the KA-50 that works better than any track-IR/Freetrack thing, due to the HMS system.

I also use the mouse-view/click-thing for the A10, there it is also very good usable

P.S.: for the mapping is use XMBC

Well, I'll certainly give FreeTrack a try in the future, but definitely thank you for the recommendation HugePanic. I'll give that a try shortly.

Harzach, I'm honestly just weird. Though I've been using my xbox 360 controller as a makeshift joystick, and it does the job quite well. But I'm quite used to the keyboard/mouse setup, and most of the sims I've played as of late are space flight... so while it doesn't totally equate, it's the habit I've gotten into.

And I considered HOTAS for like... 2 seconds, right until I saw the price :music_whistling:

So unless someone wants to be really generous and offer to sell me a used one, no way am I going to make that kind of purchase.

Seriously? You can have a T Flight X for 50$.

Well you have to forgive me on that, I googled "Warthog HOTAS" and was shown a ~$350 piece of equipment. XD

If I get engrossed in this, and deem it a worthwhile purchase, I'll definitely consider the Freetracker and the T Flight X. I'll give it a few weeks to see how I acclimate to the game and controls first.
