leafer Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 (edited) FC3 update is probably won't be ready for at least a month or two, so, I decided to buy this module and it is a lot more fun than I thought. The problem is I haven't been able to kill anything, yet. Doesn't an Abram tank suppose to have laser ranging or something to that effect calculating the firing solution for you? B25Mitch Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 The next CA update, expected mid-January, will reportedly feature improved turret stabilization for MBT's, which should let you fire accurately while moving at speed. Until then, I'd practice static gunnery and controlling units from the map view.

jackbauerisdead Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I have enjoyed CA, just got it too, SP mode. I finished one of the Battalion Advance after 4hours, and company advance in 3hours for got exactly which mission file. As A-10C first half, I will write down UTC coordinates while in JTAC mode (humvee) then go A-10C to input via CDU then just fire away, to lessen armor and air defenses and then as Armor. Here's What I found out so far: 1. you have to stalk the enemy, meter by meter movement. Use terrain. There is no way the advancing tanks can defeat the stationary tanks so you can't expect to just command AI to do it(even at excellent mode), you have to do it(did many scenarios and the advancing M1 always get hit) at least in the current update (not sure if that's the case IRL) 2. Send a scout you control and use terrain before sending main platoon, I would move slowly until I can see the antenna or turret then just move in slowly for the Kill. I always handbrake when I shoot. When Im at handbreak and engaging I would always go to reverse mode so when I get detected I can reverse right away. 3. Know the maximum engagement zone for enemy armor, I think the T-80/72s can engage you at 5000m in-sim. Once you detected a tank/enemy use the JTAC mode (B) to range it or press enter for auto solution I have engaged and destroyed t-80s at 6400m with AP rounds, not sure if that's possible IRL but i did. 4. download practice ranges so you can learn the weapon sight reticle. For some reason HE rounds fall short. (not sure or it's suppose to have a different reticle?help) I know ED doesn't intend for this to be a study land warfare sim like SBpro(which I would love to have but I can not justify $100 and upgrade price YET) but I think a lot of people will fall in love with Combined Arms and ED might reconsider. I am so excited for the mid-jan update where you can control Air assets. Gonna be awesome! Hope this helps you a bit.
Nate--IRL-- Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Jack has it right, you can't go in guns blazing. You need to use range to stay alive. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
leafer Posted January 6, 2013 Author Posted January 6, 2013 Well, to me, the first hour or so was frustrating, yet, exuberating at the same time. The stalking, yes, yes...very precious and tasty, and I was so absorbed I didn't know it was some 20 minutes past the time I usually get ready for work. Nate is right that you shouldn't go in gun blazing. I must say I underestimated what CA has to offer - such wonderful surprise. It is a lot more fun and immersive than I had imagined it. I've found myself driving tank with minigun the most. The sound it makes when you fire a volley. The storm of tracers...love it. I'll try the scout but I'm not sure if it'll do much good since I read AI can see through trees. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
leafer Posted January 7, 2013 Author Posted January 7, 2013 One very, very annoying thing in CA that I hope is a bug: trembling gun sight. I can see the turret rapidly moving from side to side in F7 view like it has gotten the shakes. It doesn't happen all the time but often enough. I thought I was blessed with an acute episode of delirium. I've gotten killed in a few stand-offs because I couldn't line up the shots. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

leafer Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 Thanks, Wags, but I'm using a mouse and I deleted the x,y axis from the setup. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
Teapot Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 Thanks, Wags, but I'm using a mouse and I deleted the x,y axis from the setup. ... a MOUSE!? Just curious, do you fly with a mouse as well ... because if you do, you're the best flying mouse I've seen! :D I've been holding off getting CA as land warfare on a PC never really interested me, but if you think it's good ... I'll need to reconsider. Thanks for the heads up Leafer old mate . "A true 'sandbox flight sim' requires hi-fidelity flyable non-combat utility/support aircraft." Wishlist Terrains - Bigger maps Wishlist Modules - A variety of utility aircraft to better reflect the support role. E.g. Flying the Hornet ... big yawn ... flying a Caribou on a beer run to Singapore? Count me in. Extracting a Recon Patrol from a hastily prepared landing strip at a random 6 figure grid reference? Now yer talking!
leafer Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 Silly, pooh. :P :D You have to play CA with a mouse because you can't drive and steer a vehicle with joystick. Not sure why they didn't allow this because holding down 'w' on a road trip is quite tiring. The game itself is really absorbing where you can easily lose a few hours in it, and I was not at all interested in armor warfare. A few things I hope they improve on are the vehicle physics, the cartoonish HUD, and the AI freakish ability to spot you. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
Parias Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 I've been holding off getting CA as land warfare on a PC never really interested me, but if you think it's good ... I'll need to reconsider. Thanks for the heads up Leafer old mate . It's not just the land warfare - it's the overall RTS-style control that I really find interesting. I had a ton of fun just ordering units around and coordinating attacks with my friends at the last LAN party I did with this (I modified the mission we were playing so one of them could fly an A10, and the other a KA-50 since those were the packages they owned) - I actually barely touched direct control for the vehicles at all. 1

Agreed. Excellent for MP force vs force where the players on each side can move units to wherever they want and give attack orders. With 1.2.3 giving us the ability to task flights, it'll expand the horizons so much farther. I rarely jump into a vehicle, but the ability to order vehicles and the fog of war makes me feel a lot more connected to the battlefield.
Purg Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Though, I must add - watching a squad mate call out a target, fly low in an A-10, take out the target, seeing AA having a crack at him and see him escape into a valley while I was in the seat of a nearby jeep overlooking the battle was one of the coolest moments I've had simming.
swift Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 you can't drive and steer a vehicle with joystick Sure you can :) the cartoonish HUD Preliminary DCS Change Log 1.2.3: Updated, higher resolution ground unit HUDs.
leafer Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 How do u add axis then? When I went to setup axis there were only X and Y available. The add button did not hing. The cartoonish refers to the way the HUD itself looking very hastily put together. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
swift Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 No axis, just buttons, but sure you can! ;) nah, you're quite right, you can't drive ground units with analog controls, yet. You can control turrets tho :joystick: This promising module that is still in beta, will only get better. Especially now that they have announced Total Combat Strike, it is conceivable that both products will benefit synergistically.
leafer Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 Whoa. I did not see that one coming which means I need to spend more time reading than playing. :D Judging by the lack of interest in that thread I did not miss much. :P ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
