Surviving Air to Air

Seems like whenever I fly in the A10 there is nothing I can do to avoid missiles from jets.

I get pinged by an enemy radar and in a couple of minutes I'm shot out of the sky.

What are you guys doing to dodge missiles survive an air to air encounter with a jet?

Don't be in the same piece of sky as a hostile fighter, unless you have a competent escort and/or friendly SAM cover. And even then, do everything to can to keep as much distance as possible between you and any hostile aircraft. It really is that simple.

If it gives you any idea, the very first step of the A-10's "progressive offense" is "hide".

If that doesn't work, defeat the bandit with turns to survive. Separation isn't viable in the A-10 unless you're BFM'ing a helicopter, so the next step is to become a threat. Point the nose at the bandit to make him think twice and perhaps force him defensive.

If you're still alive at this point, you should commit to the kill.

All of this assumes that you survive to the merge, and won't help you avoid BVR bandits. Which brings you back to the first step; hide. Get low, stay low, and use terrain masking.

I'll put Eddies advice and underline it with Gold.... Don't co-exist with the fVcker.. Not even the Su-25 (even though you're technically ground attack, he's supersonic, you're not)..

Please read flight manual of Lock On Flaming Cliffs 2 for radar spike terminology. I've had your same grief and after reading, I can now AVOID bandits.

However, depending on his proximity to you, Once you hear AWACS calls merged you start jamming. Make no moves and play cool until he launches (or may not launch). As he launches, turn CMSP to Z program and dispense flares like a fVcknut. If missile originates behind you, you have a fair chance of not getting hit if you're fast (280 kts) and pull some G's AWAY from direction of origin.

The most lethal attack direction is 3/9/12 o'clock (dead ahead, beam right and left). Expect loss of at least an engine or horizontal stabilizer with a 6 o'clock attack direction.

I also recommend watching this nice SAM evasion video as principle applies except the shooter can approach at high speed.

One more thing. AI bandit logic is that he'll use BVR/WVR weapons first, and guns after expending missiles as a last resort. Do not get into a fist fight with ANY Russian aircraft, unless he's the Su-25, and unless you're directly behind him.

And one extra crispy.. Plan your mission so that area of operation has a safe haven of elevations you can quickly dive into.

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

In multiplayer matches very often the first hint of an F-15 is a missile coming at you, and they don't miss very often. If you know they are there, chances are that you won't see them because of distance or altitude. The only thing you can do is try to find cover but if they're high enough they can just look down at you anyhow. Another thing you can try is point your nose their direction and fire an aim-9. Sometimes they see it and evade as a precaution, giving you time to try to hide.

Just one more note. Turn your jammer off. It's like a beacon for the F-15's and it simply leads them to you.

The moment you're painted, turn towards the fast-mover with the intent to bring him WVR. Hit the deck and attempt to spoof all the incoming missiles, easily enough done if you're low and have topography to assist you. Watching the RWR you will be able to judge how far the fighter is and if you're still alive and he's WVR, put your nose on his position, start searching and praying.

A lot of times, depending on your adversary, fighters will get drawn down to you with the promise of an easy kill - this is where you have your best chance of feeding him a missile. Fast-Jet Jockeys also get very irritated with you if you manage to spoof the first two or three missiles, adding to the chances that they'll come down low after you. Pray that they do - they will walk right into a good spanking. That said, these opportunities do not come by very often but when they do, take advantage.

Bottom-line is that if you are in a MP server running as a Bomber, request top-cover. If none is available, make your peace and take the fight to the fighter. You cannot run in a Toad that goes Mach 0.9.......you sure as hell will not be able to limp away in a Hog so you might as well go down fighting - as they say, every Hog has it's day :D

More importantly, when you do get top cover, do all this other stuff anyway. I tend to shoo fighters (and they get FAR with how they run) and they leave their strikers uncovered while running uselessly from missiles. The rest is predictable.

The best thing a striker can do is hide, and try to just not be seen in the first place. Notching is enough for that.

Also, from my limited experience, you cannot really outrun anything except helicopters. Not even an Su-25 as being pointed out above, though I don't think the Su-25 is supersonic...

Situational awareness is the best friend of the A-10 pilot.  Watch your RWR for enemy air.  If it appears, fly in the opposite direction towards friendly air defenses (SAM's or other fighter jets) until it disappears off RWR.  The A-10's greatest air defense asset is its low fuel consumption and large fuel tank.  You can stay in the air much long than any other airframe in the game.  Make them chase you.  If they try to engage you, they will run out of fuel by the time they finally catch up with you.  If you have been running from them and they finally get within range to engage you (they will have burned all their fuel), they will be rushed to engage you, while you go defensive like the video above shows.  Then, slowly turn back towards your object and try again.  You can do this all day. I have never run out of fuel in the A-10..you can stay in the air for hours.  But, the best way to win in an air combat fight is to avoid enemy fighters by running from them long before they are within range of their long range missiles.  So....again watch your RWR and use it to guide your flight towards the objective.
