I voted No because Vietnam would be too one sided and unbelievable.

The World War 2 era would be more fun and richer experience.

Other than that Id say stick to modern jets.

how would it be one-sided? don't you think the Mig 19s and 21s were up to dogfighting the F4s?

Yeah I missed a bit in my original post because I'm trying to keep it real. Theoretically knowing the amount of work that goes into developing a jet in DCS, I wouldn't expect more than a handful of a/c (similar to say FC3) to start it off.

Sure I know its too far into the future, however my point is...they've recognised it and decided to build it including Korea. Its different if they decided to just keep to the modern era.

DCS: Operation Crimp - the first attempt to combine strategic bombing with a Doom like first person shooter in the tunnels under Vietnam.

Seriously though, I think there is some great potential here. It's going to be really tough if my F4 doesn't have a cannon and ROE demand visual confirmation before engagement.

Need MiG-23 to counter the F-4.

If they model MiG-23, that would be intereting

We're MiG23s involved in Vietnam? I thought it was mainly 17/19/21???

I would say mainly 19/21. But you are right, MiG-23 isn't involved. Still, it would be really fun to have.

No doubt about that.

I think the F4s were pretty challenged, not really the right tool for the job. It'll be tough making them work well against the MiGs.

It was, apparently, a one-sided affair... US pretty much had air superiority in hand.

Vietnam was a guerrilla war. The air component was mainly US bombing, napalm, defoliant runs, with lots and lots of helicopters flitting about.

Not exactly...the US didn't have it all their own way - there were russian pilots flying the '21s plus the NVAF actually had aces as well.

Either way, that was real life..I'm talking about DCS Vietnam...the game or game mode. Just the ability for us players to create our own missions.

Main challenge in the early years of the conflict for the USAF and Navy F4's was the lack of a gun.

The Sparrow (AIM-7) was almost useless because of strict ROE not to fire on unidentified targets.

The Sidewinder (AIM-9) was preferring the heat of the sun instead of the Mig's tailpipe..

Same challenges could be recreated in DCS world. The current FC3 missile behavior is almost the same as the A-A missiles of Vietnam, about 30% hit probability on non-maneuvering targets ;-)

Yes, the lack of cannon plus the RoE of identify target before firing, which meant no BVR engagement.

Operation Bolo sorted out the NVAF, which then made SAMs and rocket launchers, which were supplied (donated to the cause) in abundance, the greater threat.

Before Top Gun, the US had a kill ratio of 2 to 1 in the early years of Vietnam.

I would love to see DCS: Vietnam. And I'd love to see a DCS level A-6. And an A-4, and an F-4, and the A-1. :)

While I'm dreaming, might as well add that it would be really cool to start a campaign pre-Top Gun, and as the years roll on, send the pilot to Top Gun for training before going back in theater. At this point, the AI would be upgraded to bring the AI kill ratio up to 12 to 1.

They were way better than 2-1 before Vietnam.

North American RA-5C Vigilante

Great read here

I've always been in love with this unique plane. You could do the various iterations of it, not just Recce. Has that weird bomb bay out the talicone of the plane.

"The Cadillac of carrier airplanes"

Same engines as F-4, but clean, no externals, lots of gas.... zoom!

The trick would be in simulating / modeling the RAN position (backseater).

Also... those GE J-79-lOs would need to properly put out a nice long plume of soot when not in A/B to be realistic. Don't even see that w/ the Russian fighters in DCS World / FC... which we probably should.

Anyhow... love the idea!

Vietnam era

As I don't know when ED will have the time to start on the Vietnam era I would like to know what would it take to get my hands on the DCS software development kit and to get started on the Add ons and if any one would care to join me on this project?

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I noticed all the Vietnam-era aircraft in development, and got REALLY excited. Figured I'd list them here and get a discussion going on future aircraft.

I also vaguely recall some folks working on an A-4 Skyhawk and an F-4 Phantom. Any rumors?
