When you detect a hostile radar (doesn't matter if SAM or aircraft) on your RWR it first shows you one bar (in Su-25T) of the whole "radar strengh light strip" you know that a radar is there. But when does the hostile radar notices your aircraft, in other words when do they see you on their screen? Because the radar waves have to travel from the radar to your aircraft and the reflections have to travel back to the radar station/aircraft. If the radar waves are not strong enough to make it back to the radar it sended they won't have your aircraft on their screens but you will know that they are there.

So how many bars of the light strip have to light up in order the enemy detects you?

You can't know that, just guess it. If you only see one bar strength chances are the enemy radar is not seeing you yet,but you never know for sure, depends in several things, like what radar is iluminating your aircraft or even in which mode(IRL not in game). And the spo15 doesn't tell you which exact type of radar is painting you, just if it is an aircraft or a SAM so again you'll have to guess.

If the bars go to the 12 position, "generally assume" that you've been spotted by aircraft.

SAMs are another ball of wax altogether.

Always fly with the Phanta-pod, whether you have HARM's equipped or not. That way you will always have good SA as far as SAM systems are concerned - easy enough to slave Shkval to Phanta designation and deal with them accordingly.

How exactly would you go about that, is there a way to slew/laser/lock a target for use in Shkval while being in ETS mode?

Only started playing around with that possibility, but seems like you would need to switch out of ETS and kind of eyeball, or do it manually on the Shkval.

Or do you have a better way/solution?

Designate the emitter with the Phanta pod, ie lock up the SAM by slewing the TDC over the diamond in the HUD and lock it up - the diamond will now change to a circle.

With that done, switch on the Shkval (O) and it will be slaved to the emitter automatically.

I don't recall if you can engage with non-ARMs at that point, but I know you can't slew the Shkval at all. Turn off the ELINT pod and voila! you regain control of the Shkval and have a perfect view of your prey =)
