Shein Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 It's a hobby of mine. I LOVE using DCS for reference pictures, that being said I'm currently building a 1/48 scale Su-27... ...and I'm waiting for the updated model to use as a reference for the camo!!! Any one else do scale modeling? pics welcome!
Thor77 Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 There is a scale modelling thread burried in here somewhere... leafer Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I want this: http://www.hlj.com/product/SET88204 But 77 USD!? ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
Bodo Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Great paint job, thor. How do you get the graduation between camo colours? I used to love making models about 20 years ago and rwecently bought a jaguar XK 150 model for my dad as he owns the real thing but am yet to start it. Have a revell air brush somewhere but haven't got into it. Want to, though. To take my mind off things. Might see if I can find a good model of a Huey or summit. Thor77 Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Great paint job, thor. How do you get the graduation between camo colours? Thanks mates! The paint job was done freehand with airbrush - of course lighter to darker camo paint order. http://dcsskins.wordpress.com/ Your place for custom created DCS World skins. MudRat02 Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Nice Thor, looks a lot better than mine once I'm done with them ;) I'm making the Su-27UB, had a bit of trouble initially with reference pics, so I just took the plunge and just started airbrushing away... Anyway, drop some pics when you're done! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Python Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I used to build no end as a kid, to a poor standard no doubt. I've recently rekindled my interest to the extent that I already have a nice stash of 9 kits without having built any yet ;) these include an Kinetic F-16 (the block 20 MLU Tigermeet one which has a decal sheet to scare any man!!) The airfix Lynx's, both army and navy versions, and an Academy Rokaf T-50 which is a jet I've always liked. Before I attempt any of those however I am going to break myself in gently by building an airfix red arrows hawk, all of the mentioned kits are 1/48 scale. I am very much looking forward to seeing if I can make a half decent job. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
outlawal2 Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I have also recently thought about getting back into scale modeling... What I am looking for is a 1:48 scale Black Shark.. All kinds of 1:72 scale, but can't seem to find 1:48... Anyone seen one? "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
Thor77 Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 python - make sure when you're building the hawk to paint it first with white colour - red, orange and yellow colours are very tricky and you get the best result by giving them a white undercoat. If you're intimadet by the Tigermeet boxing - look at what I did with Kinetic Vipers: outlawal2: Italeri has one in 1:48 http://www.amazon.com/Italeri-48-Kamov-Ka-Hokum/dp/B004FJWQFY http://dcsskins.wordpress.com/ Your place for custom created DCS World skins. Python Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Nice job, I love the orange dragon scheme and was gutted when I missed seeing it fly at Waddington this year! Thanks for the tips also, I have an airbrush and compressor which I also need to learn how to use and I'm getting more and more clued up as I've brought tons of books etc on the subject matter (the scale viper by Peter Fleischmann is a good one for the F-16) but as you know, the only way to really learn is to do. I've heard the kinetic kit can be a tricky one which is why I am not attempting it yet, I have after market seats and masks etc lined up for it so I don't want to ruin it after the money I spent buying it. I even picked up the 1/72 Revell version of the kit to practice on ;) Ultimately I'm hoping to recreate my favorite F-16 which is J-008 but I have a long way to go before I'm competent enough to make a good job of the painting and weathering etc I think. J-008 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Thor77 Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 well to be able to free hand camouflage you have to practice a lot... I would recommend for starters that you use masking for the camo lines - one of the easiest if not THE easiest way is to use Blue Tac or UHU Patafix - you roll it into thin "snakes" and apply it to the model and then mask of unwanted areas with either masking tape or masking liquid. By spraying perpendicular to the model surface you'll achieve a soft transition edge and it's really no-brainer. http://dcsskins.wordpress.com/ Your place for custom created DCS World skins.
