XtraChrisP Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 With the F/A-18C more or less officially announced, I'm wondering which aircraft are going to be available to midair refuel it. I guess you could do the boom drogue adaptor for the KC-135, but personally I would much rather see some actual naval assets dedicated to refueling. Marine KC-130s would be at the top of my wish list. Especially since my wingman and I would be able to grab gas at the same time. Does anyone in-the-know have any info on this issue?

And as for the S-3 - that model is fugly as hell, so we could use some new tanker anyway. ■ L-39C/ZA Czech cockpit mod ■ My DCS skins ■

HungaroJET Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Yup, we need new tankers :p:joystick: I agree I'm going to pick off that buddy tank from the Viking and puting on the Hornet :) Another brainstorm: puting on KC-135 wingtips too...for NAVY birds ;) Atop the midnight tarmac, a metal beast awaits. Home Fries Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 In real life, the KC-10 and KC-135 can do probe and drogue refueling, though the KC-135 requires an adapter that attaches to the boom. That said, "iron maiden" refueling with the KC-135 is much less forgiving than the softer basket and longer hose of the KC-10 (and for that matter the S-3), so the selected Texaco aircraft may have an effect on mission difficulty. -Home Fries My DCS Files and Skins My DCS TARGET Profile for Cougar or Warthog and MFDs F-14B LANTIRN Guide

The_Pharoah Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 they certainly get quite close to a hot exhaust esp with the drogue (or whatever its called) bobbing up and down. Furia Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Here you can see again the value of a DCS C-130. With the same Airframe you can have very exciting variants that will allow us to do many different roles andif one day the AC-130 is delevolped I will be very happy. The 130 can do a lot of tasks from transport, refueling, "spec ops", gunner..... We are happy because we are going to have the wonderful UH-1. The Herky is its fixed wing brother. :smilewink: Plus being a tanker.:D [sIGPIC]http://menorca.infotelecom.es/~raulurbina/ESA/banner_furia.png[/sIGPIC]

I guess you could do the boom drogue adaptor for the KC-135, but personally I would much rather see some actual naval assets dedicated to refueling... As mentioned there is already a tanker version of the S-3 in the sim - another "carrier capable" alternative would be the KA-6D(tanker version of the A-6 Intruder). JJ
Eddie Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 The S-3 and/or Superhornet buddy refuelling are fine but they are for a different purpose than the KC-130/135/10. The carrier borne tankers are there to provide a quick drink if an aircraft is low on gas after a bolter or two, they are not there to extend an aircraft's combat radius, they simply don't have enough fuel capacity to do that. That us what the large tankers are for. So in short, what we'd actually need in DCS are both the S-3 and the KC-135/KC-10 with drogue refuelling. The KC-135 can have wing pods for probe and drogue receivers as well as the adaptor in the boom. But in a perfect world we'd get the KC-10 which has both systems built in.
