ENO
1) What are the Hardware System requirements to host a DCS Server including video card? I think any Quad core (only two for the game but Windows and other services can draw on the others) will do- though speeds above 3ghz would be recommended. Speed is more important than cores. No hyperthreading required (as it often limits overclocking). Minimum 8 gigs of RAM (12 likely preferred). Assuming you're turning the 3D renderer off in the graphics.cfg you can use a bare minimum graphics adapter. Windows 7-8 64bit. (EDIT: As mentioned on the bottom post- A DirectX 11 graphics card is now a requirement... Even if you're running with the 3D renderer turned off. This was very disappointing for me.) (Edit: In 1.2.4 they no longer recommend using the graphics.cfg / lua- create an autoexec.cfg as mentioned HERE . This will help preserve your graphics settings through updates and repairs.) 4. Module Requirements. Is a module required to be purchased to host a server? DCS World is all you need to have- and it's free. 6. What launch options are used to to host a server without a dedicated video card? I assume you mean without a monitor- as you do need some form of graphics adaptor just to get into the interface. It can be onboard graphics with minimum resolution- but you need something. If, like me, you wish to host a server with no peripherals (no monitor, no mouse, no keyboard) then you can do so through Teamviewer- a free program. With Teamviewer you can access your computer from anywhere with either an installed program on a different computer- or through an internet based application. It really does the trick and is awesome. 8. Server Config tips to limit access to external views to improve realism? And how this is done? Mission Editor or config files? Mission options can be limited in the mission editor. The use of "use these settings for all missions" found in the settings menu has proven to be a bit unreliable and basically "forces" the server settings onto the server which has created conflicts in the past. Go into mission editor into "mission options" and tailor your settings around the desired mission parameters. 9. Which missions are good missions to host for newbies? Tough to answer that one. Many server run very open simple missions. Probably too many to list. (EDIT: One issue we've had is with inconsistency between versions with a variety of missions. What may be necessary to guaranty stability is to go into the .miz file and empty out the ME related content -not the custom sound files, photos etc- and then reopen the miz file in the mission editor. Verify your settings, re-save the mission and THEN host. Here's how to do that: 1) Open up old mission in new mission editor. Save as a new file version. 2) Go into saved games folder (wherever your missions are saved). Find the relevant .miz files. 3) You may need to go into windows to be able to "view file extensions." I believe this is done through the control panel in appearance and personalization into some folder options, into view tab and uncheck "hide file extensions for known file types." That should allow you to see and change the .miz to .zip. To do so, just single left click on the text of the file name and just erase the .miz and input .zip. It will warn you that the file may not work properly- just click okay. It's fine. 5) Double click on the new zip file and it will open revealing a variety of folders. It doesn't hurt to just clear out the folder of everything but the included mission file. This means you may need to go back into the mission editor and edit some items. Just go back in and check airfield status and your warehouses. Sometimes mission settings can be switched as well. 6) Close the zip file, and return it to a .miz file. You will get the same warning about changing the file... click okay. 7) Open the mission in the mission editor to make necessary changes and save it. ) 13. Admin commands for kicking or banning players? We use SLMOD from Speed- and SLMOD comes with its own commands that are generally -admin kick / -admin ban. His software comes with detailed instructions and a variety of commands. Refer to the links in his sig. Servman was another program still in use though the guy who set it up (panzertard) is no longer active. Some members of the community still touch up the software when necessary- though I don't use it anymore. It does, admittedly, have some really nice functions that SLMOD doesn't but Speed is constantly adding new content. 14. Admin Tools needed for remote administration? Only one I use is Teamviewer and SLMOD if you want to call that a tool. I can then assign different regular members as admins who can change missions, kick / ban etc. 15. Can a server cycle a list of missions for different modules? Yes, with SLMOD functionality. I can't recall if people outside of the remote server and outside of SLMOD can actually change missions. I have seen posts mentioning to turn the render off in the config. But there is no help on how to do this? Go into C/program files/eagle dynamics/DCS World/Config/Graphics.cfg with Notepad++ (not JUST notepad... Notepad++) and browse down to line 343 and change "render3D = true" to render3D = false (EDIT: Again for 1.2.4 this setting can be added in your autoexec.cfg file by adding the line: options.graphics.render3D = false ) don't copy the bracket- Edited January 10, 2017 by ENO editing for 1.5+ "ENO" Type in anger and you will make the greatest post you will ever regret. Macross
Eno, you can download and use 7zip to explore .miz files without the need of renaming them etc. After 7zip is installed you can right click on .miz file and goto 7zip context menu and open archive. A lot simpler than renaming opening and reverting name etc. http://www.7-zip.org/ 7zip is also a great general purpose archive and zip app as well. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
ENO
Thanks Macross- Wrecking crew told me about that as well but I was so used to using winzip I was just plodding along. It's a good tip- probably make it easier for myself if I were to do it. "ENO" Type in anger and you will make the greatest post you will ever regret. Fuby
I asked about this in another thread..but yes, would be nice to find all the information in ONE thread.. so I will ask here as well.. What are the command line arguments.. so I can launch a server from a .bat or windows shortcut? On a remote box.. all I want is to make a .bat file or windows shortcut that would run multiplayer as a server without a gui attached... I noticed someone mentioned adding an autoexec.cfg someplace with "options.graphics.render3D = false" to accomplish this. So what would a whole command line look like.. simulator.exe --net login to dcs servers.. start a server with a certain map.. and let it just go on its way without a 3d gui and seen on the servers listing? My missions end fine and load next map in cycle already and loop back per triggers.. I just need to get the first one loaded in this respect. The biggest issue I have at present..is the GUI running.. when not attended it defaults on a 3d screen which generates heat.. and gets the fans kicking. I usually just set it to f10 screen if im around and the cpu / gpu usages drops to near nil.. which makes for a silent cool running server.. I am assuming using one of the server addon mods will allow me to kick/ban admin from another machine anyways.. so why do I need the GUI running on the server machine? SLMod seemed easy to install.. wish it had the gui turnoff also included..sigh (hint or help) Games-Survival.com

ENO
When you set up that .cfg file, I presume you actually set it up through notepad++ and it shows in windows as a .cfg file? May not show file types if you have extensions hidden- this why I ask. Do you have the file I the right config folder? "ENO" Type in anger and you will make the greatest post you will ever regret. ENO
Just to clarify- you still need a video card to see the menu as far as I know. You don't need anything heavy- but you need something. blaueente
Then install in different directories and name them accordingly in the ../dcs/dcs_variant.txt so that they create their own saved games folder. doing so allows u to run two stable branches in parallel. i found this in some thread what explaines using a dcs installation as a live 3d environment for mission building mfg ente found it : http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=149769 To run both instances on the same PC, install DCS: World a second time in another location (takes about 18 GiB). The installer should be smart enough to copy the files from your existing installation instead of downloading them again. Then create or edit the file dcs_variant.txt in the installation folder and change the content to something else (I used "secondcopy_D" because I installed it on my D drive). If dcs_variant.txt includes the string foo, DCS will use %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS.foo as the settings folder.
