CPU or GPU, what to change?

Recommended Posts

Sometimes i'm finding the sim bogging down a bit to around 20fps when thre is a lot going on. I have an amd 955 quad core cpu overclocked to 3.82 ghz and an nvidia gtx 560ti. I can upgrade one or the other and would like to know which one to do first. Is it worth getting an octo core 4.2 ghz cpu or something like a gtx 660ti?

Your CPU is the problem. Unfortunately, the 955 is not going to be worth the upgrade and anything much better, as I am sure you realize, will require new memory and mobo.

That depends on what you intend on doing with it. For DCS only, I would have to say no. However, if you plan to use the machine for other things then it may well be worth it.

For DCS only, the best bang-for-buck, IMHO, would be an i5-3570k. It will overclock really well and won't break the bank.

It's not just for DCS, I use Arma 3 and CLOD a fair bit too. I've always stuck with AMD and haven't got a clue about intel.

I am the opposite. I know next to nothing about AMD as I have never used (excepting before I got smart and switched to Nvidia).

8 core bulldozer didn't get us anywhere did it? These games thrive on and just need 4 cores. An AMD 6 for example would do nothing to help. Look up some info about it. Generally gamers have stuck with 4 cores, the software is written for it. 6 and 8 cores cause other benefits. None for DCS.

I hope AMD can continue Strong. For DCS you should go with an Intel build. I know it sucks, more money but its worth it. Im getting along just fine for my needs and my computer is 15 months old. i2500k and use a ssd cache drive and a p8z68 at least. FLYS!

Ok what about putting in the best quad core I can use with my motherboard? It looks like it would be an AMD phenom 2 x 4 980 3.7 ghz. If I got the black edition I could overclock it to what 4.2 ish ghz. I'd rather not change the board, ram and cpu again. Would that be a good option? It would be alot cheaper too.

Putting my affiliation w/ AMD aside; Intel i5 or above would be the best CPU for DCS

Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2),

ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate, XFX RX6800XT Merc 310 (RX-68XTALFD9)

What type of motherboard do you have? Does it support you're DDR3 RAM at all? And You're RAM is not fast. Does you're mobo bus support higher MHz for RAM?

As we speak I'm goeing from AMD socket to Intel Socket. My computer parts will arrive in a few days, no more AMD :P

The Sim doesn't take in account more than 2 core. One for the Sim itself and one for the Sound Engine.

So, a quad core is largely sufficient. (Because dual core isn't more sold, is it?)

I have 2 sticks of Kingston KVR1333D3N9/4G 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM

Any good?

No problem with that. 8Gb is sufficient too. 1333MHz is in the norm. You don't need more. And i5 3570k is a good choice:thumbup: You'll not regret it.

Now, if you want more, look for GPU replacement. 560 is a good card but I think it has 'made its time'.

I think i've decided on the i5 3570K but what motherboard to go for. The local shop tried to sell me a gigabyte one but i've had them before and wasn't that impressed they don't seem to be the easiest for overclocking either. I'm looking at Asus now but can't really tell if one is better than the other. Would something like this do the job? http://www.maplin.co.uk/asus-intel-p8h77-v-le-628888

If you want to overclock that 3570K (and that is pretty much the main reason to get the K-model), the motherboard should be based on the Z77 chipset.

ASUS would be a good vendor to choose. Something like this should do nicely.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just though i'd check back in and say thanks for all your advise. I've got the I5 3570k and p8z77-v lx installed now with a decent heatsink and fan. It's so much better than the old amd 955 and even though they are both 4 core cpu's the stock (3.4 ghz) i5 is about double the speed of my 3.8 overclocked 955. I've overclocked it to 4.1 ghz but it doesn't seem to want to go any higher despite the multiplier being at 43. More research needed.
