What does CAP stand for?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what CAP stands for when calling for support in the A-10C missions. I know SEAD is Suppression of Enemy Air Defences, CAS is Close Air Support, but what is CAP? I assume it has something to do with A2A support. Thanks for the info!:joystick:

I've done a list about all task we can have in a flight simulation.

It's pretty old now, but it can help you.

DCS world didn't existed yet, many new features came with 1.2.2+

I'll update it sooner or later.

CAP = Combat Air Patrol. It means the air cover mission afforded to allied flights operating in an AO.

SEAD = Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses. A-10 pilots trained and missions designed for pure SAM hunting and pursue are dubbed "Wild Weasels". Usually, dedicated HARM (High speed AntiRadiation (radar radiation, not nuclear gamma) Missiles are carried. E.g. F-16's (May we see it in DCS quality, can I get an AMEN??!!!)

DEAD = Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses

SAR = CSAR = Combat Search And Rescue, dubbed "SANDY" flights.

CAS = Well... A-10C, that's for sure; Close Air Support.

Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

Well then... what does "BRA" stand for ... that's what AWACS says all the time. I've really got no clue. :)

I don't think anyone in here knows what a CAP is ..... us bombers keep getting shot down over the tgt area cuz our fighters are showing off someplace else . Cap should always be over tgt area , or close to respond , imo .

I think what you're looking for is a TARCAP, not CAP. CAP I believe is a patrol to keep enemy airplanes out of friendly airspace, but I could be completely wrong. I'm not sure what difference, if any, there is between a CAP and a BARCAP.

But I think a TARCAP is specifically for covering bombers/CAS flights.

There are several variations on CAP. TARCAP is over the target, BARCAP is between the target and the incoming bandits.

If there are bandits in the target area, then there is either a) an airbase in a direction where no BARCAP was tasked, or right near the target area (which would require a TARCAP at the very least), or b) one or several bandits have leaked though the BARCAPs (LEAKERS).

TARCAP instead or BARCAP can be more dangerous, as the fighters will have much less time ro respond. Good planned BARCAPs, assuming no one leaks, should be efficient.

Now, if BARCAPs are ill-placed, this is another thing.
