It would seem that everything I've heard about Starforce is correct: it only serves to punish people that actually pay for software for their honesty.

I have two optical drives: a Plextor 12/10/32A (which renders the disc only semi-readable, mind you) and a Sony DVDR (which actually allowed me to install the game.)

After installing and rebooting, Starforce tells me that it cannot read the disc in either drive. I find this incredibly obnoxious, but before I say that I will not buy another ED product again in the future, I'm curious if anybody has any suggestions. Though, I can't imagine what one could do if Starforce demands that the disc be put in another drive and it won't read it in any available.

Thanks.

It might be because you have a defective #2 disk (which a lot of people got). By any chance did you get Lock On Gold? If you did, then it is not starforce's fault, but rather the idiot company that published it and degraded ED's product.

Nope...

I ordered it from Naturalpoint.

I was really looking forward to it.

I haven't ordered from NP, so I don't know how it's packaged - one disk, two disks?

Does it work on a different computer?

I suggest doing a little looking into this way. It may indeed be an issue with SF itself, in which case I suggest contacting SF - they seem to do their best to help out usually.

I agree it isn't a hassle anyone should be subject to, but it is what it is.

By the way, do you own any other games with SF on them? There's quite a few.

That's weird, Natural point does not have any defective disk. And i rarely hear about a disk drive that can't read it. Could you tell me the order you installed the game.

I suggest you go to some friend, and install Lockon + FC on his computer, so you can test it with other hardware. If still same results, CD might have some error.

Now SF is prompting me for a "disc key." After going over both the case and disc, I have found no such thing. The installation instructions also mention abosolutely nothing about a key.

Am I missing something?

A single disc.

By the way, do you own any other games with SF on them? There's quite a few.
I installed Hammer & Sickle without incident.

I've had a working LOMAC 1.02 install for months.

I put in the FC disc and installed it.

There is, or at least, there should not be, a key involved with a CD install.

This sounds very much like the corrupted disk problem that happens with Lock On Gold, but of course, all it takes is for the drive to read the disk in a way SF doesn't expect and boom.

I suggest trying it on a different computer, it may really be the disc.

Yea this sounds like a bad disk.

But here are your other options:

1.) try it on another computer to check if the cd-drive is either the problem or the disk itself.

2.) Reinstall it, but after you install the original, do not patch up to 1.02. It was suggested that 1.1 FC should be installed over the original 1.00. And then make sure you downloaded the cd version of the 1.11 patch and install that.

I only have one other system running Windows here, but I guess I can try.

I swapped in two other optical drives last night:

I replaced the Sony DVDR with a brand new identical model

I added my Plextor 24/10/40A

Still no change.

I will try this later and report back.
