Fortress Mozdok - Hold the Line

I'm getting quite frustrated with this mission so I'm seeking advice how to beat it (other then editing it).

For those who don't know : your protect is to protect Nalchik airbase from an airstrike. The whole red force is 3x 2 ship flights of Su-27, you leading one of them.

The enemy force consist of 2xF-15C(Fighter Sweep), 4xF16 (SEAD), 4x F-15E (Strike team). I just don't know how to approach this mission. Our team manages to take down the F-15C but expend most of their missiles and ussualy loose a plane or two (this is before I ever manage to get airborne).

The rest of the force (usually 4xSu-27) just get shredded with the 8 aim-120 armed airplanes (which imho they should get, but hey, that's how the mission is designed). I try to focus on the F-15E (usually manage to kill one or two), because that is the mission objective, but there is no way how to comunicate this to the AI. I'm an A2A noob so any advice is welcomed.

This mission gave me a LOT of trouble too.

I had an INGENIOUS tactic that worked but I still failed the mission.

Take off, fly straight for the mudhens, then do this: Lock one up, launch, he freaks out and drops his A2G payload. Break lock go for the next guy. Rinse and repeat until the mudhens have no more bombs left!

But they just fly over the runway harmlessly and the mission fails anyway. Sigh.

I eventually beat that mission by taking off from the taxiway, burning HARD for the fighter sweep, taking 1 or 2 with me on the way, LAND at nalchick, refuel and rearm, and wait patiently for the F-16s to complete their SEAD and turn around. Once they do, go for the mudhens.

Honestly, a lot of luck is required as well. I've had missions where the initial flankers kill the eagles flawlessly and were there to help, and I've seen them get wiped out from the get go.

Hope this helped...

Wow. Best solution ever. Too bad that the scripting fails so hard...

Thank you! I thought it was a good idea too... Doesn't kill the mudhens, but it foils the attack for sure. Another problem with the scripting, the mudhens MUST die. Even if one limps back to base, you won't get a success.

is this mission somewhere available itself or do you have to play a Su27 campaign for this? sounds interesting !

You can always play it as a quick mission, as you can with any mission in DCSW.

Simply go to mission, drop down menu, FC3, campaign folder, and it's in there somewhere. I forget what it's title is; snoop around until you find it! :pilotfly:

(Deleted former post.)

Took a look at the mission--but haven't had time to fly it. From the looks of how it's set up, you are a two ship flight and there's a 2nd two ship flight that's set as your escort. So they'll follow wherever you go. You have four ships but have limited control of two of them. The third flight is out there doing it's own thing.

The base you are to protect has two Osa SAM units defending it. The blue force has a fighter sweep, a four ship SEAD flight and a four ship attack flight. You win if those four attack aircraft are destroyed. It doesn't matter how they die. They just have to die. The blue SEAD and attack flights are set up to loiter inside of their SAM coverage until the game is well underway. So...my suggestion would be...

Don't be in a hurry. Take off, keep your airspeed down until your wingman and the escorts form up. Fly down toward Nalchik but keep it between you and the attacking forces (you want those SAMs positioned to disrupt any early attack on your flight before the main force arrives in the area).

Circle and keep an eye on things. Once it's clear that the SEAD flight and strike flight are finally on their way, begin your intercept. Just keep away from the Patriot batteries down in blue territory. Your goal is for you and your wingman, along with the escort flight, to disrupt the SEAD flight and, hopefully, knock out 2 or 3 of the attack flight. If you do that, the Nalchik SAMs should do the rest. Give that approach a try.

EDIT: Had an opportunity to fly this approach this afternoon and it worked fine. The last attack aircraft was downed by an Su-27 loitering near Nalchik but both defending SAMs were OK so it would have been downed by one of them, if the fighter wasn't there. The track doesn't play back correctly but the Tacview file is attached. I got careless and tool a ride on the silk elevator just before the end but, if you look for the attack F-15 you'll see it get shot down about 5 minutes later. At that point I got the successful mission statement. A fun furball starts around minutes 25 or 30.
