Some more work being done this week on the pit in readiness for DCS 1.5

Tonight, working on the Ejection Seat and TV Bracket - raising the TV stand by 150mm to align the center level with the person eyes

Ejection Seat to have knockers attached and belt tensioners machined. Plus custom making the Drogue Gun (picked up a drogue chute from ebay). Plus fitting the oxygen bottle.

Next week, complete the front instrument panel, left, right and center consoles.

It's not my goal to make an exact replica, but to make a 70% visual representation to make people feel/think they are sitting on an ejection seat.

Work finished for tonight, looking forward to next week

When I worked at BAe, I cant remember if it were Farnborough or Famillies Day but they had an ejection seat, it was a full on Martin Baker seat but you "loaded" it with a winch against a spring.

Strapped in, pull the handle and the spring fired you about 5 feet up a guide rail.

I recommend it!

I'm betting you have some good stories to tell Mr Burns.

If I get my way (and can work it out), I want the handle to be the locking mechanism for the seat which will be on sliding rails so people can get in and out. :)

Bottle off Ebay - there are more if you take a look

A lot of sanding and grinding still to do then filling in the gaps and priming and painting.

Next is to add rivets and screws where appropriate and cut some holes for the seat cords through the tensioner

Waiting on drogue chute to arrive and will finish off the headbox properly.

The front panel will have a 22" screen mounted on the rear and this covers the 3 MFD and RWR receiver nicely.

Next week is manufacturing the glare shield and mounting the ejection handle plus adding the nylon tracks to the bottom of the seat.

Jan 2016 Update

Managed to do a little more on the pit. Still keeping it real simple and need to do more with the finishing / stickers.

The seat sits on 2 channels with nylon guides to enable it to slide in and out really smoothly and with almost no effort. The ejection handle is attached to a long stainless rod and this goes through the base plate and inserts into guide holes so you can lock the seat in place.

Underneath the seat is the butt kicker and with the seat made of aluminum you really feel the rumble.

This all sits in my dining area with full permission from my wife :)

You wanted to know how much Kuky - probably around nz$2000 for the seat alone with all the metal, cushions, harness, paint etc. But don't tell the wife :)

The right side console has a hollow section below for storing maps, paper etc

Next stage is to get the 23" screen mounted behind the instrument panel and to also add fake instruments.

That has to be the strongest build I have ever seen. You could actually take that to war. I am so impressed and the workmanship is first class not to mention that seat is looking so real.

Well done X93355.

Could you talk a bit about how you finished the metal. I assume its ALL aluminum? I didn't think paint would work well on aluminum. I've used epoxy paint on some of my firearms and it stands up well but that was always on steel. Painting aluminum is something I'm not familiar with.

Cheers John.

Everything is made from Alluminium, some of it hand fabricated but mostly drawn up in Sketchup and then routed.

I had the all of it powder coated so painting is a loose term.

The only thing I would do differently would be to weld the side consoles from the inside so the joins would be really crisp.

I'm really happy with the side consoles, they can be freely moved but due to the weight they don't slide all over the place but allow me to adjust for getting in and out.

The seat I am really proud of, it's based on a Mk10 and managed to pick up 2 of everything from ebay so I can build another one at some stage. I've contoured the seat backings so it feels very real (I've compared it to the real Mk10 that I have access to).

The survival pack under the seat cushion is more contoured cushioning that is very hard and the yellow is more material that the wife sewed up for me. It works really well.

I could have spent more time getting it to look authentic but the cost of the whole thing has been quite high. Re-looking at the seat costs with all the extra parts from ebay, it probably has cost closer to $2500 for the seat alone but that's fully painted and including estimated labour costs.

The front panel I loosely based on the F18. The MFD spacers and instrument bevels behind are to help give it more of a 3D feel and I really like them. Due to the monitor size behind, I have had to put the RWR next to it.

The front panel is also bolted down onto the center console so it can be removed easily enough. This way, I can create other front panels and swap them out as needed i.e. M2000C or P51 etc etc.

I've had a couple of pilot mates over and they are really impressed, everyone wants me to build another so we can do some dog fighting.

I'm really interested to see how the Rift will work with it when it is released.

Version 3.0

Version 3.0 is a modification of the last all aluminium 2.0 but this one will have:

1. More accurate seat with extra detail

3. Redesigned center console and TV/Monitor bracket.

4. Lots of access panels (with captured nuts)

5. All the cables will be mounted internally and there is to be a cable break out panel for quick release / hookup

6. 2 x Mini LFE's for enhanced vibration

7. Base is solid aluminium and smaller for portability

Have 2 months until my Rift arrives... so game on

A few more pieces cut, picking up some pace now. Just go give some reference to the size, the base above is 1.8m long and 1.2m wide.

The sides to the ejection seat will need a bit of sanding.

A little more work this weekend with the center console cutout and tacked. Next will come all the access panels, bolting down everything in position, tread-mat and new monitor bracket.
