PFM is better than AFM, Which is better than IFM, which is better than SFM..

OK so I tried to figure this out.. and I thought SFM was Simplified Flight Model and AFM was Accurate Flight Model.. but now I don't know what the heck it is with the addition of IFM and PFM .. so what is all that?:helpsmilie:

I really should not say at this point.

However, one of the main goals is not to fragment the community. We're obviously planning a separate branch, however it's branded. And the main goal is, regardless of what you're planing, what you're buying, what you're supporting, etc, that you should be able to play with any other DCS fan online at any time without any undue hassle.

We'll release excruciating details on our approach in September.

Just make it all DCSW Modules (Plane Module, Terrain Module, Etc), or ED has plans to change DCSW to allow for "MOD PACKS"/MODULES to house planes, terrain, ground objects all in one module? :p:pilotfly:

Why couldnt it be... individual planes, WWII Combined Arms, and individual maps...

SFMs are accurate too, just FYI. They just aren't capable of modeling all the conditions than AFM can.

So, it would use DCS engine, but won't be a part of DCS: World as we have it now but rather a separate entity? If that's the case then call me disappointed.

Wouldn't it have to be Analog Combat Simulations?, cuz it's not simulating anything Digital......:lol::lol:

It's the simulator itself that is digital, since it's on a computer. Not (necessarily) the subject being simulated. ;)

If you want digital combat, you can always play Darwinia... :D

Many accounts from P-47 pilots that the weight of fire from x8 .50cal hammering a tank would push it off the road and flip it onto its side.

I'm always late to the party when I'm travelling, but...

M2 Browning, 8x, 3400 rounds total.

45g per ball.

908m/s

KE = mv^2*½

KE = 0.045 * 908 * 908 * ½

We find that Kinetic Energy at muzzle for one round is ~18 550 Joules.

We will (falsely) assume that the bullet does NOT lose any KE during flight, and transfers it's energy purely as KE when hitting the tank (that is, no heat, no material deformation etcetera).

We will further assume that ALL 3400 rounds are fired simultaneously, and ALL of them hit the tank.

So the force imparted towards moving the tank is:

18 550 * 3400 = 63 071 496J (or ~63 Megajoules).

Our target will be a typical german Panzerkampgfwagen 4. 25 tonnes, roughly, or 25000kg.

Let's plug in the numbers we know and we get:

63 000 000 = 25 000 * x * x * ½

So let's just solve for X and we'll have found how fast we made this tank move!

V = sq.root( 2 * 63 000 000 ) / 25 000

V = sq.root( 126 000 000 ) / 25 000

V = 11225 / 25 000

V = 0,449

Thus, assuming all bullets hit at muzzle velocity, do not deform nor impart heat onto the tank, and that the tank is on a frictionless surface (like floating in outer space, for example), this fictiional P-47 could make it move at a whopping half meter per second.

Of course it's a bit of a cheat as I didn't include KE imparted by the P-47 itself onto the bullets, but since I allowed all bullets to be fired simultaneously... I think you'll find this acceptable?

And of even greater importance is to consider this simple fact: each action has an equal and opposite reaction.

A Panzerkampfwagen 4 weighs 25 tonnes.

A P-47 weighs about 7.9 tonnes fully loaded.

So what would happen to the P-47?

V = sq.root( 2 * 63 000 000 ) / 7 900

V = 1,42

And remember that in THIS case, the force is enacted onto the plane BEFORE air resistance, so now we're sort of getting a kinda real number, while the force on the tank would have been lot less due to friction, heating, deformation etcetera etcetera.

Basically:

Any P-47 pilot that actually made a tank flip wouldn't live to tell the tale. He would be in orbit without a space suit. Well, not really, but whatever happens to the tank, at LEAST thrice that will happen to the plane.

One way to have fun with this is to temporarily edit the weapon configuration files in DCS World, and then try firing your GAU-8 after you turned it's ammo into howitzer rounds. Let's say aiming is a problem when you do that... :D

In other words: don't just believe what random people say. Do the maths.

(And since I said that, someone will probably find some embarrasing mistake somewhere in my own maths... :D )

He didnt say that... he really didnt say anything, so do get carried away with reading between the lines... you can easily say that he means that they will release everything needed for DCS World to fly in a total WW2 environment with out the current map, planes, etc. SO basically you could fly an A-10 in 1940's Europe scenario if you purchased all the WW2 items... no what I mean? :)

DCS: World: War: Two?

We're very concerned by the amount of colons in our title, believe me. Tried lots of colon cleansing. Just can't seem to hit the bullseye.

Be forewarned. Unless somebody has an epiphany by Sept 1st, we're going to have a rather awkward name for an awesome game.

Just make it all DCSW Modules (Plane Module, Terrain Module, Etc), or ED has plans to change DCSW to allow for "MOD PACKS"/MODULES to house planes, terrain, ground objects all in one module? :p:pilotfly:

Sorry, I can't talk about distribution methods. In any case, we want to make a product first, launch it, see it succeed, and then start expanding on it. Chances are, whatever we think today, may not apply once we release.

So, it would use DCS engine, but won't be a part of DCS: World as we have it now but rather a separate entity? If that's the case then call me disappointed.

That's not what I'm saying at all.

I'm saying is, five years from now, when the series has grown to include every aircraft known to man, and a random guy goes to the online store and buys Plane X and Plane Y, he won't have to worry about anything, product names, compatibility, nothing. He'll just go online and play with anyone he wishes.

That's extremely positive, I think.

Thanks for the answer. I understood it wrong I guess, something was lost in translation.

I look forward to see more info in September. :joystick:
