I, too! I didn't mention it because I didn't want to detract away from the strength of my P-38 request. ; )

But if I could choose one thing other than the P-38, it would certainly be the P-47.

Incidentally, I think we might have a better chance of getting the P-47, since The Fighter Collection has one.

Haha well I don't think there is any way to deny the P-38. I definitely want a chance to drive the "fork tailed devil." However, that means I will have to come up with a Yoke solution for the full effect. Anyone thought about this?

If I had wanted to fly bombers I wouldn't have bought a joystick.:music_whistling:

I can't think of any WW2 aircraft I don't love so I guess I will be happy whatever but I admit a

P-38 would be interesting managing two engines. If we got a pacific map as well as Western Europe well I think I'd struggle to leave my pc to go to work.

The P-38 is a very singular fighter--there was no other high-performance twin-engine prop fighter in history, at least not that made it into large-scale production. The Mosquito wasn't a fighter, although it was sometimes kludged into that role, and the Me 110 failed as a fighter (and couldn't be described as high-performance by any stretch of the imagination). The P-38 was also the only twin-engine fighter that had counter-rotating propellers, AFAIK. Add the extremely-unusual twin boom design (and the then-rare Fowler flaps), and you have a most unique airplane. Every fighter is different, but the P-38 is far more different to most than, for example, the P-51 is to the Me 109, or even the P-47 to the A6M.

What's more is, there's never been anything more than a half-way decent portrayal of the P-38. Every sim-game I know of that featured a representation of a P-38 failed to acknowledge its gentle stall characteristics, its Fowler flaps, and/or its counter-rotating propellers (except for Aces High II, but AHII has more than a few flaws of its own). I'll grant that most other fighters have never had a decent portrayal in a sim, either, but the P-38 has gotten the shaft more than others, having had its weaknesses portrayed strongly (and over-done, usually--e.g. compressibility) but not its strengths.

Perhaps in complete objectivity, the P-47 would be a better choice for Eagle Dynamics's next WWII fighter, after the FW 190, because it would be easier to make a P-47 than a P-38, and because the Fighter Collection possesses a P-47 at present. However, there's something special about the P-38 that makes me fervently hope that it is someday done justice in a flight sim, and perhaps that flight sim may be DCS.

Actually the German Messerschmitt BF-110 was designed as a fighter but ended up being used as a fighter/escort and later on I believe a medium bomber...

Not in the same class as a P-38 performance-wise, but arguably it was still a twin engine fighter...

*This has been edited for spelling. Thanks to Echo38 for pointing out my error in my original spelling of Messerschmitt... ;O)

Gotta be WW2 carrier ops so:F4U

Hellcat

Zero

That is all ...

Not all...

We will need the F4F-4 Wildcat, FM2 Wildcat, Ki-61 Tony, N1K2 George, Ki-43 Oscar, P-38 Lightening, P-40 Warhawk, SBD-3/5 Dauntless, TBM-3 Avenger, SB2C Helldiver, Ki-84 Frank, Ki-100 Tony, P-61B Black Widow, A-20 Havoc, B-24 Liberator, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-26 Marauder, B-29 Superfortress, P-47 Thunderbolt, B-25 Mitchell, PV1 Harpoon, PBY-5A Catalina, Ki-45 Nick, Spitfire F mk VIII, Beaufighter XXI, Ki-44 Tojo, G3M Nell, J2M Raiden, D3A Val, B5N Kate, B6N Jill, D4Y Judy, G4M Betty, Ki-21 Sally, Ki-46 Dinah, H-6K Mavis, H8K Emily, E13A Jake, L2D Tabby, Ki-48 Lily, J1N1-S Irving plus quite a few more that I am overlooking right now. And that is just for the Pacific theatre of operations. I'd love to have the variety of opponents for my F4U Corsair to make things interesting plus every now and then I’d like to grab a bomber and kill some ground targets when things are slow. The more aircraft that are available as flyable the more interesting the combats will be. AI is usually pretty predictable and I would rather go up against a human opponent. While being a great change of pace a strict war at sea combat sim will get old, at least it did in the other flight sims I’ve flown. First we need a large map to toy with… the Soloman Islands Rabaul and Eastern New Guinea would be perfect if the whole world cannot be simulated.

Truly superior pilots are those that use their superior judgment to avoid those situations where they might have to use their superior skills.

I'd like the p-47, its a real handful, and its so fun to fly a plane by controlling the supercharger, just for its originality, and how different it is from other planes in how its engine operates

B17 or Lancaster - but I think heavy bombers would be 'odd' in the current DCS environment. I dare say if DCS or a 3rd party made a WW2 environment for them to fly in then the world is their oyster :)

I'd like to see some of the more prominent fighters from the major powers in the war. We have the P-51 for the US and we will soon have the 190 for Germany (though I think the 109 was a more iconic fighter for the Germans). Need the Zeke for Japan (A6M5 Type 0 Mod 52 should be the version that can keep up with the P-51 and Dora) and I'd like to see the Yak-3P for Russia. Spitfire of course for Britain, Mk. XIV.

The plane I'm still waiting for is the Bf-109 though. Eventually I'd like to see all the fighter and bombers make it into DCS.

  • 2 weeks later...

B-17 with fully stocked multiplayer gunner and bombing positions.

Man, that would be cool. The bombsight is unique enough to add a nice learning curve too.
