Changing HDD

splash

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm about to change my main hard disk (Operating System, programas, DCS World, Flaming Cliffs 3, etc.) for a new SSD disk.

Do I need to deactivate in this cases?

a) If I clone my current hard disk into my new SSD. Only changes serial number (3 points), so I think that I don't have to deactivate nor activate again (losing an activation).

b) If I install Windows 7 in my new SSD from zero.

Thanks.

a) I am actually not 100% certain. This depends on how Windows would identify itself on the clone. I would deactivate just to be sure.

b) Yes, deactivation would be necessary if you wish to re-use the current activation.

Good luck with that, I would plan with a new system if I were you. :music_whistling:

Depending on vendor, there are tools for this. When I bought my Samsung SSD it did include tools towards cloning.

I didn't use it though, so I can't say what would actually happen.

When I bought my Samsung SSD it did also include tools towards cloning.

I (tried to) use it and I can say that it was a pita and from the google research done at that time, it didn´t look so good, but heck, I´m sure there are some for whom it worked.

I also got cloning software with one of my SSDs but I also did not use it. My philosophy is that the machine could probably benefit from a clean OS install and driver update anyway not to mention general housecleaning.
