Mar044 Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Hi all Anyone notice during engine fire that the engine temperature readings are normal, I will double check oil temperature again, but I know during a active fire with flame the engine reads normal and doesn't spike, and from what I remember the A-10 does the same thing. I find it a issue since I tend not to go 3d person to see if a fire is raging and not know what is going on since sometimes no fire warning is displayed in the cockpit. anyone else? if it's confirmed can they add engine temp spikes in so I can tell that my engine turbine blades are melting away on me :D Call Sign -Winter- "The North Never Forgets"
Griffin Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 (edited) The engine temperature is being read from inside the engine where the temperature is already high. A fire is most likely to happen outside the actual engine when a broken fuel line is going to burst into flames. If you deploy the fire extinguishers, they will not be emptied into the engine gas path itself (which would only interrupt the fuel burning for a while and resume again if fuel and ignition is not cut off) but into the nacelle where the possible fuel line is burning. If a fire would start inside the engine, I think most likely the turbine would be in shreds anyway by the damage required to light an unwanted fire inside the engine. ARM505 Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 (edited) What Griffin said. An engine fire warning will be triggered by whatever engine fire detection system the A10 has - I'm guessing the usual kind of fire loop running around the casing that will sense an over temperature condition in the cowling around the engine. It's possible to have a fire which manages to not set this off I guess (ie a tailpipe fire), and of course a raging fire around the engine will do absolutely nothing to the exhaust gas temps, so you wouldn't see it on the gauges - totally realistic as far as I know. What wouldn't really be realistic (IMHO) is suddenly exploding when your engine is on fire. FC modules such as the Su25 have a propensity to burn for a while, then suddenly explode. It's highly unlikely that this could happen to an A10 - at worst the entire engine would just fall off (probably designed so that an uncontrolled engine fire would do just that) My experience is on B737's, also a 'podded' engine that will just fall off if the worst comes to the worst. In simulated engine fires, the only warning we get is the fire alarm. No change in indications, and no loss of thrust even. I don't play the A10C module that much, so I'm not too familiar with what they've programmed. Edited September 6, 2013 by ARM505
BaD CrC Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 What's even more disturbing is that flying MP, your mates are telling you that your engine is on fire, your EKRAN is also telling it to you, but the external view shows nothing. Generally speaking, you can see your mates engines burning, but not your own. Saw that in 1.2.5 and 1.2.6 https://www.blacksharkden.com http://discord.gg/blacksharkden
