Operation Hunter

Summer 1995. The Great War of Liberation has entered its 55th year. Over the past few days the Russian army in the Crimea has become seriously weakened Our American and German ground forces are currently well established along a front stretching from Evpatorija in the west to Sovetskij in the east and we have almost achieved air superiority.

The 7th Allied Tactical Air Force has deployed its A-10 aircraft to their Forward Operating Locations (FOLs) in the Black Sea region. You have arrived in the conflict area with the 104th Fighter Wing and you are leading a flight operating out of its FOL at Simferopol Air Base.

The US Army’s 80th Armoured Division is building up its forces in the Leninskoe sector. A major offensive will start in four days with the aim of taking the town of Krasnogvardejskoe. However, Russian 9A52 Smerch Multiple Rocket Systems belonging to the 75th Rocket Artillery Regiment dispersed across the northern part of the Crimean peninsular will pose a serious threat to our advance.

Your main task over the next few days will be to seek out and destroy as many of these Rocket Artillery units as possible and fly Close Air Support missions in support of our ground troops close to the front line as required.

Mission 1 Smerch Hunt

Day 1. 09:30 Hrs. At dawn this morning US Special Forces units operating behind enemy lines located three 9A52 Smerch launch vehicles setting-up at their new firing positions. Start engines and get airborne immediately in order to locate and destroy these units between Pervomajskoe (SP2) and Azovskoe (SP3). The Special Forces units will laser designate the most important targets for you.

Mission 2 On-Call CAS at Pavlovka

Day 1. 12:45 Hrs. You are already airborne with your wingman to provide On-Call Close Air Support as required in the Pavlovka (SP2) area. An A-10 acting as Forward Air Controller in the Sadovoe sector has observed Russian armour on the move and it is likely that the enemy will soon be in a position to engage forward units of the German 41st Panzergrenadierdivision (Pankow). Your targets are currently 10 miles north of your present position – engage them immediately.

Air cover will be provided by two Royal Belgian Air Force F-16As on CAP just north of Belogorsk.

Mission 3 Artillery Hunt

Day 1. 20:00 Hrs. Late in the afternoon reconnaissance flights and Special Forces troops observed Russian artillery units being set up at Stahanovka (SP2) and Rovnoe (SP3). It is vital that these targets are destroyed as soon as possible before nightfall so get airborne with your wingman immediately. Take care as you taxi around the airfield as some parts of the manoeuvring area are still cratered from earlier attacks.

Mission 4 On-Call CAS at Krasnogvardejskoe

Day 2. 11:30 Hrs. You are already airborne with your wingman to provide On-Call Close Air Support as required in the Krasnogvardejskoe (SP2) area. An A-10 acting as Forward Air Controller in the Sadovoe sector has observed a flight of Russian attack helicopters, possibly Ka-50s, on the ground close to the river crossing at Zheljabovka with their support vehicles. Your targets are currently 10 miles north of your present position – engage them immediately.

Mission 5 On-Call CAS at Evpatorija

Day 2. 16:20 Hrs. You are already airborne with your wingman to provide On-Call Close Air Support as required in the Evpatorija (SP2) area.

A previously inactive Russian Air Defence System Command and Control Centre at Zadornoe (45 34 N 33 10 E) covering the north-western part of the Crimea has just come to life again and a Snow Drift radar started radiating near the town of Serebrjanka (45 38 N 33 30 E). Almost immediately, a Royal Belgian Air Force F-16A fighter sweep flying over the area was engaged by SA-11 SAMs.

German Air Force F-4Es of Jagdbombergeschwader 63 “Treptow” armed with AGM-45s are already on their way to take-out the SAM site’s radar. You are to proceed to Zadornoe to destroy the command bunker and any enemy vehicles in the area and then proceed to Serebrjanka to mop-up what is left of the SAM site. Your first target is 35 miles north-west of your present position. Be advised that there are many MANPADs in operation in the area.

Mission 6 Special Forces Recovery

Day 3. 06:00 Hrs. Our Special Forces units have finished their work behind enemy lines and a US Marines CH-53 helicopter will pick them from the disused airfield at Krasnogvardejskoe (SP3). One last group of Special Forces troops is racing up the Amerskoe - Dzhankoy Highway in a truck in order to make the rendezvous before sunrise. However, the Russians are now aware of our mission and a column of Infantry Fighting Vehicles is making its way towards the airfield from the garrison at Azovskoe.

You and your wingman are now lined up on the runway at Simferopol Air Base. It’s just beginning to get light. Take-off immediately and destroy the enemy vehicles before they get within range of the CH-53. You will need to reach the airfield at Krasnogvardejskoe by 06:15 Hrs if the mission is have any chance of succeeding.

Mission 7 Interdiction at Azovskoe

Day 3. 14:45 Hrs. A reconnaissance flight has spotted a number of 9A52 Smerch launch vehicles parked at a depot on the south-western edge of the garrison town of Azovskoe (SP4). Take-off immediately with your wingman and destroy all the vehicles that you can find at the depot. Be advised that the town is well defended with SAMs and AAA. Following the pre-programmed route will keep you clear of all the known threats en route.

Mission 8 Interdiction at Krasnaja Poljana

Day 4. 10:30 Hrs. A reconnaissance flight has spotted two enemy supply convoys forming up at the town of Krasnaja Poljana (SP3). Take-off immediately with your wingman and destroy all the vehicles that you can find in or near the town. An A-10 acting as Forward Air Controller near the front line will illuminate any targets of opportunity that appear in your vicinity. Be advised that there are many MANPADs in operation in the area.

Mission 9 On-Call CAS at Pjatihatka

Day 5. 08:30 Hrs. Just before dawn this morning the US Army’s 80th Armoured Division and the German 41st Panzergrenadierdivision (Pankow) and Leopard 2 tanks of the 33rd Panzerdivision (Falkenberg) started to push north towards Krasnogvardejskoe. The 80th Armoured Division has made good progress; however, the German units have got pinned-down along the road from Annovka to Sadovoe with resistance being particularly fierce around Najdenovka.

You are already airborne with your wingman to provide On-Call Close Air Support as required in the Pjatihatka (SP2) area. Your task today will be to attack enemy positions, mainly machinegun posts and anti-tank-weapons, which are slowing down the German advance. Otherwise the right flank of the US forces will be vulnerable to any Russian counterattack.

AH-1W attack helicopters of the 33rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade are also in action over the battlefield.
