Wrecking Crew Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 Hi, For Event, Action I want Sound To All. The listed file extension choices are .mp3, .wav and .ogg. Problem -- I can choose a .mp3 but it won't Play nor can it be heard in the mission. Problem -- I cannot even see the .ogg file to load it. The .wav file does work. I prefer .mp3 as the file size is only 3.7 MB compared to ~20 MB for the .wav and .ogg file types. St3v3f Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 Not having any problems here. MP3 is simply not supported afaik, but that is no problem. OGG is a better format anyways, as it encodes the same audio quality with less space. Plus it's open. If your OGG file is as big as a WAV, something is wrong. Try opening the WAV in a tool like Audacity and Export it to ogg. For DCS, a quality setting at about one third of the scale is enough in my opinion, as you've got background noise anyways and all that, so no hifi quality required aka: Baron [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Wrecking Crew Posted October 5, 2013 Author Posted October 5, 2013 Hmmm, when I go to load the .ogg file into the mission, the .ogg file is not shown in my directory. All three -- .mp3, .wav and .ogg were made from the same source -- I ripped the .mp3 from youtube and used an on-line converter for the wav and ogg. The wav is 20 MB and the ogg is 18 MB. I'll try it again in a bit -- I have go do chores before I really get in trouble. ;-) Visit the Hollo Pointe DCS World server -- an open server with a variety of COOP & H2H missions including Combined Arms. Joyride Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 Easy solution - save as either .wav GSM 6.10 format (much smaller file size than standard .wav) or use .ogg and simply reduce the sample rate. 11,000 Hz works pretty well, you can even go down to 8,000 Hz. File size will drop dramatically, though you may also notice loss of quality. For radio calls for instance, the quality loss may actually make it sound more realistic.
Wrecking Crew Posted October 6, 2013 Author Posted October 6, 2013 (edited) A couple of things -- I made a simple test mission and the mp3 file would load and play in it, but it won't in the new mission I am building. I did an on-line conversion from the mp3 file to ogg, but this time instead of choosing the lowest quality I went with the normal quality and a different on-line converter. The resulting ogg file is only ~3 MB now instead of the 18 MB from the previous attempt. This file could be seen in the Sound To All Action load window and it did play OK, so I will go with it. But the miz file size was still quite large (11 MB) and when I opened it it still contained the mp3 audio file (the one that won't play) as well as the new ogg file. After I manually deleted the miz' mp3, and another mp3 that I also used for testing and still was in it, the miz file size is a good 3.5 MB. -- The mp3 file would play in a new simple mission but not in a mission with some stuff in it -- The ogg file had to be created with normal audio and not a lower quality -- mp3 files that I tried to use were left in the miz file so I used 7z to delete them Here's the site I used to get the ogg to work - http://media.io/progress.jsp --- ^^^ thanks for the help, folks I am attaching the files. Hmm, can't upload - say a security token is missing. PM me if you want a link.
