Just a heads up. It's available for pre-purchase now at a discount. That aside, it is actually available in DRM-free version on GOG.com!

Man, I didn't believe this project will succeed...

Sorry for bumping this thread again but... man... I've finished the game now and I could almost feel guilty if I don't pitch this game a bit here as I'm aware there's a lot of no-bull sci-fi fans here.

What is SOMA?

SOMA is a really, really, really solid sci-fi game and a non-cliche first-person horror by the creators of the Amnesia series. It even comes with a

(in the style of the short included in the original post). It's the kind of game that stays with you. I recommend it so strongly that I'd even advise you to watch a playthrough without a commentary if you can't, for any reason, play the game.

To put it into perspective, I was playing SOMA instead of DCS World 1.5 Open Beta even though I have all the hardware I need. :D That should convince you.

SOMA is very spoiler-sensitive!

A glimpse on the comments under a trailer on YouTube and it's all done. Same with steam community forums and other places not moderated for spoilers. Same for many of the reviews out there. Not to mention some of them raise silly concerns that may stick with you even though they are close to baseless.

Honestly, I recommend you don't read or watch ANYTHING about the game. Just watch some of my screenshots.

PS. The graphics at the beginning of the game look very bad. Endure it (not included on the screenshots).

It's going to be a hell of a trip, I tell you :D

I've just glimpsed onto the SOMA wiki and the SOMA info portal (full of spoilers!) and I can already tell I'll be doing another playthrough to check some additional stuff. If I dont't find the time, there's going to be a lot of interesting stuff for me to read, a book worth of stuff...

Well, I'll be in hotel, in a small town, with a full casino about 200yds away. However, I don't gamble like that, so this should suffice for entertainment. :)

Dammit I'm still not through with Styx and now this (while, as previously mentioned, DCS 1.5 was also just released). Stop promoting games like that! :D

Let me make it up to you. If you have limited time, drop Styx for SOMA. SOMA is a an entirely different animal. And it's shorter. Twice as short I think.

BTW, SOMA is well opgimized.GF 660Ti gives 60 FPS at 1080p at maxed out settings. If you don't get this kind of performance, there's an issue. Max the game out and disable the in-game vsync option for starters, then retest and report.

It's quite good, it's also scary as hell. :P

I've been reading their blog for months now. There they discuss their research on immersion and other gameplay aspects. Players getting a heart attack is not of their concern clearly and they evidently have put their findings into SOMA to the last bit. An exemplary point: "Player's character death in horror games brings an undesirable relief to the player." Yep. This is Frictional Games :)

LOL, i am too young and too fit to die from a heart attack playing, but too susceptible to its addictive nature to just quit. It's kind of the gamer's third circle of hell. :D

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

It would be was to quit if we were after action RPG or shooters. Their progress apart from graphics is close to zero while story-oriented games have come a long way. No to mention simulators.

I'm posting again because some of you may have confused the short film series titled Soma: Item <number> with the actual short film series released after the release of the game.

It's Soma - transmissions

8 parts so far

EDIT:

There's also a lot nor to http://soma.wikia.com/wiki/Item_Documentations than I initially thought!

Huh! After I finished SOMA, I'd been promoting it in the What Video Game Are You Currently Playing? thread, but forgot about the dedicated thread.

Dammit that game is scary as hell. It's also got an amazing story, and I just couldn't let go of it.

If anything, the "monsters don't attack" mod should come with the game. At some point I was pretty annoyed by them and the game would work well without them, too. But I didn't install that mod and played through more or less hardcore.

All things considered, it's one of the most memorable games I've played in a long time, definitely worth playing.

-50% on Humble and my final notice. It's too spammy to my taste :)

Trivia:

The voice actors for both Samuels and Amanda Ripley from Alien Isolation did voice acting in SOMA.

Another heads-up for SOMA fans. You need to see the Love Death Robots anthology!

The episodes vary in theme in an extreme way so obviously I don't mean all of the episodes. I won't point you to the exact ones as to not spoil anything.

Also, you might wanna check out The Signal from Tolva with its lore book. It may look like a cartoonish shooter but... It's not anywhere near as deep or complex but still.
