DCS: Spitfire Mk LF IXc Discussion

I wouldn't rely on any Clostermann's statements for accuracy. He's a very well known liar... He just wrote an adventures novel, not a history book, and you know novels don't have to be any accurate at all. So if he talks about the biggest and mightiest Luftwaffe in front of himself alone just to appear as the big pilot he wasn't is a novelist mind only.

S!

Well, to me it doesn't look like he points to a mighty Luftwaffe against him.

For instance he points out how the quality of the German pilots was quite uneven, with a small group being very experienced, but the rest being not very well trained.

But anyway I have heard about his reputation, and try to weigh both ways, with the claims against him, and what I think he tries to say.

Regarding the discussion about how many Bf 109 K4's were available in mid 1944, it is interesting to see P. Clostermanns opinion:

According to a 1964 report from Allied historical services which he read after the war, one Jagdgeschwader, JG-300, in July 1944 had no less than approximately 100 FW 190 A8s or D9s available, together with around 90 Bf 109 K.

To me that doesn't sound like the 109 K was such a rare airplane that some people in here claim it to be?

It was rare, that statement above is just complete BS.

Not only is the first operational Dora extremely well documented and researched (Dortenmann and 210003, third production plane to roll off the assembly line in September 1944), first K-4's went to units in September/October as well.

My skins/liveries for Fw 190 D-9 and Bf 109 K-4:

I kinda agree about the balance thing, but since ED's stance so far was to have the most common/basic variant for 1944, I do not see why an exception would need to made with the Spit IX. That's why we have the P-51D with 67" and not 72" boost (although I think we should). That's why we have the 109K with 1.8ata and not 1.98ata boost (since it wasn't present yet in meaningful numbers in 1944, just as the IX at +25 lbs wasn't).

1.98ata K-4s were not present in meaningful numbers, if at all, even in 1945.

EZ42 equipped D-9s and K-4s weren't that common either.

Anyways, for for those that want to look at the a/c types in Lw units, at least to the end of 1944, http://www.ww2.dk/

It is not correcting a mistake but just being more specific.

It was just a humorous image I found on a Spitfire board of all places...

The point is:

1.98ata K-4s were not present in meaningful numbers, if at all, even in 1945.

EZ42 equipped D-9s and K-4s weren't that common either.

...is off-topic. I would just like to see it stay focused on the Spitfire? Fair enough?

I must admit I would prefer the full wing version at first release and the clipped wing as a later variant. It's going to break my heart everytime I go into a bank and look along that beautiful elliptical wing to see that clipped end.

Even the Airfix kit of the clipped wing Spitfire comes with extra wingtip pieces!

Love that poster Sith.

I apologize for participating in the diversion.

Upon going through the whole thread, I now realize what fray I stepped into. sad.gif

Well, to help put the the subject back on track:

Here is a nice little video I stumbled across, featuring the "Kent Spitfire" LF Mk IX TA805 FX-M from Biggin Hill.

It is a compilation with take-offs and landings and features the aircraft both with and without invasion stripes.

Enjoy. smile.gif

  • 2 weeks later...

VEAO's spit will be a clipped XIV, so that one could probably roll with the Dora so guys focused on performance will have options and those focused on looks will also.

Know and use all the capabilities in your airplane. If you don't, sooner or later, some guy who does use them all will kick your ass.

+1. And its not like the Spit IXc is bad. There is a reason why there were 3 types of tips (cut, eliptical, extened) and why the eliptical was the most produced.

The Spitfire IXc without could be an additonal thing, no problems with me... but standard eliptical wing is what gives the Spitfire its looks and legendary performance. The plane thanks to the eliptical shape has very pronounced buffeting and has roll rate simillar to the 109 while retaining awesome elevator power at high speeds, which makes it the "Spitfire", as pilot has to be gentle on the elevator and struggle with alerions. It would be great to have that feeling.

I won't buy the cut wing, I want eliptical wing Spit.:noexpression:

I want both, as well I want more down the road, I want a Merlin 70 at some point, I want the different tail, I want a full blown HF variant at some point, but any Spitfire at DCS level is going to be a dream come true for me. I'll be pushing hard for the ability to change the wings in the ME, but I hope we can get more variants down the road, same with the other aircraft we have now.

Sure in the end I want them all. But having in mind how ED dismissed any hope for other Bf109 as they were deemed too similar to the K4, I have very little hope for different Spit marks. I want to be wrong though.

Who dismissed any other 109 variants???? You need to stop making things up, also lets stay on topic, this is the Spitfire thread.

I am sorry. I think I mixed up ED with VEAO. I remember talking about G2 which according to them was too simillar to G10 which it too simillar to K4 to be a viable choice. Sorry for mix up.

Then I hope that we can get all the Spitfires. Still I want the elliptical the most. Without it its not the same.

Ditto - a Spitfire L.F Mk XVI w/Merlin 266, E armament, slightly bulged upper cowling and late large area "pointed" rudder could marry the V-1650-7 of the P-51D with the Spitfire IX airframe. (see http://spitfiresite.com/2010/04/spitfire-mk-ix-xi-and-xvi-variants-much-varied.html )

Why make more ww2 planes they's all similar because they all have propellers.

I see a big difference between G2 and K4.

Also i would like to see one day a DCS Tempest. And i also see a big difference between typhoon and tempest.

So guys, don't panic... if you want to have elliptical wings FIRST, we could start from this variant as we have a pair of tips in our storage. No problem. It will be even less complicated for me.
