About this Squadron

The VMFA-214th black sheep is a United States Marine Corps fighter attack squadron that has a long and distinguished history of service and heroism. The squadron was formed in 1942 and became famous for its exploits in World War II, under the command of Major Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, a Medal of Honor recipient and one of the top aces of the war. The squadron was nicknamed the “Black Sheep” because of its unconventional and unorthodox tactics, and because many of its pilots were misfits and troublemakers.
