Good info, Sarge. I'm gonna have a look at these snap views tonight. Thanks.
-
When you say 'switch', are you refering to a modifier type switch, or a particular switch/button on your hotas? Also, are you saying that there is a particular snap view which zeros in on the tacan/ils panels (or any/all other side panels)? Using the Trackir, I simply haven't explored the snap views. I always thought they were just for forward/side/over-the-shoulder/front-left/right etc... or are you yourself setting up a particular view and then saving it somehow?

6 DOF is an Art Form. There's no doubt, Trackir is a powerful tool for us simmers these days. It offers the kind of realism we only dreamt about fifteen years ago, providing fidelity and immersion... not to mention enhancing the simmer's overall SA picture tenfold. But I find doing 6 DOF, properly, while not really difficult, or hard to set up, or confusing in any way, to be something that I need to work at... especially with DCS: A-10c Warthog. From the first few times I got in the A-10c, I realized that there is a whole lot more than just turning your head this way and that, or leaning in close to peer at the guages. There are centerings needed often, Trackir momentary pauses needed, zoom re-sets, sensitivity adjustments in the Trackir GUI, head pre-positionings to get to other views more easily etc... For instance, I found that when it was time to look at the TACAN or ILS panels, it was often a real pain in the ass chore... where getting to a comfortable view way, way back there seemed to have me contorting in my chair like a double jointed circus performer. Also, often times - I guess from having reached the conical limits of the Trackir device - the view will shake and shimmy way out of control, and even stop moving around at all, forcing me to start all over again. So I started to develope routines. A nice little trick I use, amoung others, calls for looking up 20 or 30 degrees, then centering BEFORE trying to make a TACAN panal look; for now my head is at a higher canter looking straight ahead; this affords me many more degrees of downward looking movement to work with. My God, how much nicer and more stable it is when I do that simple routine first. Another one is squaring up center, then shifting over all the way right or left before looking down at either side panel - a great technique for working with the CDU. I also realized soon enough that to get to a certain viewpoint, cutting the Trackir input for a moment after getting the view in the general vicinity, then switching to Mouse look/zoom refined the whole process in some instances. Now I'm trying to practice these kinds of things so that they're ingrained in my muscle memory, and I find that as I gain experience with this sim, I'm starting to develop a choreography of movements so that the cockpit experience is a more seamless, more efficient, and faster endeavor. As I see it, it's another skill set we should (must?) learn... in addition to all those stick and rudder and avionics and weaponry and battlefield SA skills we need to succeed. But I think, more than that, it really is grace in motion. It's a Flight Simmer's Art! You can see it in some of the better tutorial videos... how smartly the guy moves around the cockpit and shifts views. Sometimes, I wonder if it's just me, or if you guys out there find managing the cockpit in 6 DOF something which requires your attention more often than not. Perhaps it's just me who has difficulties.... wouldn't be the first time.

A little something I just discovered is that you can adjust the degree of precision enabled by your precision button. In the 'camera' tab, there's a list of attributes. The bottom one is Precision and it defaults to 100.0. Increasing this value will cause a more precise movement. I tried all the way up to 700.0 (which was vastly slow) and have since settled on 250.0. Major improvement in my opinion.

Cloud shadow flicker on the horizon, although not a huge problem, is my only gripe with 1.1.0.9. Irregular drawing at intervals (appearing/disappearing or creeping/receding shadows - horizon only), especially during Trackir head movements, is somewhat of an immersion killer. I'm getting this with a Gforce470 1.5, latest driver. I hope ED will look into fixing this.

Pardon this stupid question but, which folder do I choose when the setup asks which folder to install in? My game is in: E\programfiles\steam\steamapps\common\dcsa-10c warthog. But when I select the main folder, it adds ...\new folder at the end and it says that 1.1.0.8 needs to be installed and drops out to desktop? If I delete the '\new folder' then it asks if I want to overwrite the whole ...\dcsa-10c folder. That makes me nervous, so I thought I'd ask here first. Do I direct it to one of the sub-folders like Bizar or Bin? EDIT: Disregard, fellas, I got it.

Ok, got it! Thanks much.

I'm gonna try patching to 1.1.0.9 and see if I have any problems before I jump into a full install. I wonder if anybody is having issues just applying the patch over 1.1.0.8? Main question is: should I do anything with the c\user....\dcsa-10c\save game folder (like delete it) before applying the patch? Or is that only nessesary for a new full install? Thanks.

dancing clouds 2.zip I got cloud reflections doing some weird stuff. Is this a known bug? If not, anybody know some tweaks on my end to resolve? I added a short track so you can see what I'm talking about. AMD Phenom II 6x 1090T black edition 3.39ghz; 8 gigs ram; Gforce 470 1.5; DCS: A-10c running 1680 x 1050; all else full except civ traffic.

Manual section on TAD (Hook) is confusing
bonemarrow replied to bonemarrow's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
The manual sure enough messed me up and I can see from the replies here that I'm not going crazy - damned manual... but it did get me off in the right direction. Like you guys say, it's all about going up and messing around with it. I should have just done that before posting here. It's obvious, after messing around with it, that the OBS 18 button is all about TO/FROM info and cycling through all the combinations between hooks and symbols. It's actually quite useful. I thank you guys for the feedback! -
First off, pg 308, it says that for OSB 18, when something is hooked, the top line displays "HOOK", the bottom the rotary selection. On Fig. 227, pg 309, the MFCD picture shows OWN on top, HOOK on bottom. Inconsistent... but not really a big deal. My main confusion: it says when a symbol is hooked, the SPI symbol will be placed over it, and a hook line will run from it to the OSB rotary selection. Considering that, looking at Fig. 227 makes no sense. It shows a waypoint symbol as the hooked symbol (SPI symbol over it) and OWN as the rotary selection... yet the hook line runs from ownship to the BULLSEYE symbol. This makes no sense to me. I keep thinking that maybe in the diagram, a hook hasn't been made yet, that perhaps the WP is simply the current SPI. But it seems to me if there's a hook line present, there must be a hook, and that must have the SPI symbol. I find this all very confusing... but I'm sure I'm probably overlooking something very obvious, so could somebody point it out. Thanks.

Switch Modifiers Question Lets say I set the 1, 2, and 3 keys as control Switches. To help understand, lets say 1 represents Views routine, 2 represents Flight CTL routine, and 3 represents HOTAS routine. So, do you have to turn a switch off (hit it again) before you activate another switch? I mean, after pressing 1, will pressing 2 turn 'off' the 1 switch (override it) or will the config now be expecting a 1+ 2 + key/button and give me nothing at all since I hadn't mapped anything like that? Thanks.

Drift away, my friend... one can only learn from your experiance and knowledge - and that's a good thing. You do know, though, that there's smoke coming out of my ears right now trying to digest all that. :joystick: give me a month or two... :D Thanks a bunch for the info! I do get the main drift of your answer. Oh, btw, when you say I won't have the connected picture of the flight plan, do you mean that since the dial is not on flight plan, there will be no representation of it on the TAD?
-
Discussing the STEER PT Dial in the EGI intro chapter(pg 172), it describes the FLT PLAN selection as being able to select the Flight plan WPs with the STEER PT Toggle (plus TAD conditions); the MARK selection as using the STEER PT Toggle to select created Mark points; and the MISSION selection allowing access to "the entire mission waypoint database". Question: does "the entire mission waypoint database" then mean a combination of the Flight Plan WPs and all created Mark Points so that you can cycle through everything with one dial selection? Or does this mean something else? I know there are WPs which represent Airfields (and maybe other stuff too, I don't know) so I'm not sure what exactly MISSION will show. I'm just wondering if, say, I want to fly to a flight plan WP one moment, then to a Mark point the next, and I'm gonna be switching back and forth, if I can just set the Dial to MISSION and be able to cycle them all? Thanks.

Thanks, slackerD... that really zeros in on the issue. Though I don't think I'm computer savy enough to get up into that mouse.lau file. I might try getting the btn to act as lalt c like they mentioned. Appreciate the link.
-
Concerning the middle mouse btn, removing it from the modifiers list still does not allow me to map it. The problem is that with 'ALL' selected in the Actions List, the mouse (and Trackir) categories are grayed out(light blue) - so I can't select any fields for the mouse hence no chance to map it. I wonder if this is so for everybody, or a glitch just in my system somewhere? Any feedback would be welcomed.
-
Can you map the middle mouse button (on scroll-wheel)? Seems it's set up as a modifier. I sure would like to set it as 'Clickable Cockpit Toggle'. Just to be sure, it isn't reserved for anything, is it? Mabe something I haven't come across yet as I've barely cracked the surface of this sim.

Hey, thanks a bunch, JaBoG! That answers that.

At the point in the Navigation Training Mission where the instructor gets around to having you fly to waypoint 4, he tells you that the flight plan course for this waypoint is 270, and to set the HSI as such. How does he know this??? I can't seem to find anywhere in any of the CDU pages where the Flightplan Course Setting for each individual Waypoint is displayed. I know how to use the HSI, but I'm lost not knowing what course to set on it for the current steerpoint. Any help?
