OK, for those interested, I have managed to regain DCS in MT mode and pretty much the performance I had before. Following various suggestions here, ( thanks all) I removed myself from tehe Beta, which made my Meta software update and install new drivers. I removed and re installed QVFR and used the sandbox code .dll fix.
Once this was done, DCS starts OK in MT and I am back with performance from before...happy bunny! Thanks for the advice. 

Actually, both answers very helpful, thanks - i should have clarified in the OP, I had only left the boat for 20 minutes, so it was not a question of the S3 running out of loiter time or fuel, 4 hours is way more than I would need for any mission I make. So Zylls linke dvideo will probably show what I did wrong, however, I am still keen to understand the workings of the script......
