  1. Hello,

I recently started up DCS again and updated to the latest patch and was trying to play again. On startup, the box for activating the MiG-21 opens up saying there's an error. When I go to re-enter my CD-key, it just repeats the same error, as if the key is invalid.

On the ED profile page, when I enter the CD-key into the key checker, it gives me a message saying that it's not permitted to trade or share keys anymore.

I've been trying to contact the Magnitude support email, but just keep getting canned responses to repair and update DCS and try again. DCS has been repaired and updated, and that's clearly not the issue.

Can someone please help me with this? The MiG-21 was one of my favorite modules, such a beautiful flight model and cockpit model, I miss flying that little alcohol-cooled lawn dart around

    Thanks,

    Harnis

  2. because the MiG-21 is a sex-machine. Sheer beauty.

And the DCS module is one of the best modules in the game, honestly. My order for someone new to DCS would be 1) buy Flaming Cliffs 3, and when you're ready to move to more complex sims, 2) DCS MiG-21. It's a gorgeous model, the flight model is amazing and feels so right. And it's just a fun aircraft to fly. I love all it's quirks.

  3. Those are flares guys. Rotor down wash is giving that effect. In the V-22 video, you can see puffs of chaff just like the poster said.

so the chaff is the glittery kinda things in those photos? Is that the chaff reflecting the light from the flares?

  4. So, inspired by the other existing quick startup kneeboard mods for the MiG-21 and MiG-15, I decided to make a version of it for the Ka-50. This mod adds pages to the kneeboard of the Ka-50 that go through the basic startup procedure. Will get you from cold and dark to hot and running.

known bugs: pages skip from 2 straight to 4, page 3 was a duplicate by accident and I haven't gotten around to renaming the title at the top of each page.

  5. The Chaff is very hard to see as it consist of perforated aluminum sections to stay in a tight pattern to look like an Aircraft Blip on the SAM Radar.

Chaff is cut into very fine strips of different length about the thickness of a hair follicle. It's actually thin enough to get into your skin pours.

    chaff.jpg

So it could be cool if it was possible to have different chaff textures/animations depending on the aircraft....

here are some chaff clouds guys (do not confuse with the flare trails)

the BEST visible chaffs are on the MH60071 pic and on the longbow-apache pic (flares @ left and right but in the middle, below the chopper those are all chaff clouds)

ah, ok. See, in those kind of pictures I always figured it was all just smoke from the flares. But if that's the case, then the chaff makes a very distinctive whitish whispy cloud. That's nothing like how it looks in the game. Right now in the game, it's a 2D-looking patch of grey clumps in a kind of disk that expand as they leave the aircraft.

  6. V-22 Osprey Chaff/Flare Test

cant see the chaff release just the initial puff, i think you might struggle to find a actual clip of the release.

it looks like maybe at around 20s, before the flares come out, you can see grey-whitish puffs coming out the back of the plane. Is that the chaff?

  7. well, they eddited the chaff too, now i nearly can't see it anymore

chaff irl? i'd think you won't see it at all since the pilot should focus on situation and wouldn't see the chaff pop out with certain planes

I'm not sure. I would imagine it would be hard to see anyways. But I always pictured it as a big fluttery cloud of tiny metal specks, rather than a kinda static-looking 2d-looking tiny ball of grey things. Would be nice to see some more animation to it.

I also can't seem to find any videos of a jet dropping chaff.

  8. So I've been wondering, is there anyone who knows how to mod chaff and flares? ED has made big improvements to the flares and they look pretty realistic now, but the chaff still looks the same as always.

How does chaff look in real life when a jet dispenses it? And how does the DCS effect compare?

  9. Hey Harnis, will look into it, its not my top priority at the moment. To get working with other aircraft you have to modify each aircraft's \"aircraft name"\input\"aircraft name"\keyboard\default.lua to include the code to turn on/off and adjust gain of the NVG. see HERE

yeah I tried that method but it didn't seem to work.

Either way, awesome job getting the mod working again in 1.5

  10. Here's my version of the mod structured to work with 1.5. Those kind of cockpit texture mods stopped working in 1.5 because they changed the file structure of where the texture files are arranged.

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4b4k0pz6ksst11x/AABlb5d-tVo2mvd6DYLZ73DZa?dl=0

It's my own modification of the original one by toby to get that greeny yellow tv screen like you see in some photos of Blacksharks.

Feel free to use this version, or just check out the file structure and rearrange your files the same way.

PS I have it arranged for JGSME

  11. I would say after you are comfortable with Flaming Cliffs 3 the mig-21 is a good next step. It has just the right amount of stuff to challenge a new player but not overwhelm them and the tutorials/manual are good and easy to follow.

I'd second this. FC3 is a fantastic value for the money, especially if you get it on sale or with a coupon code. The aircraft have simpler controls modelling, simpler radio, etc. Some of them like the F-15, Su-27, and Su-25 have really nice flight models too, so they're a joy to fly. They're a great start to the game, and give you a large set of missions and different roles to fly.

I'd also second the MiG-21. It is simple to start up, and has relatively simple systems compared to the A-10C. It's a little tricky to take off and land, but it's fun. Weapons are simple, and it can do air to air AND air to ground effectively. It's nice and fast, looks cool, and the devs did an amazing job of modelling the aircraft (one of the devs is a MiG-21 pilot).

  12. first of all, awesome work, I missed the great NVG mod

but I have a question. The old one was able to work with the A-10A, the Su-25, the Su-25T, etc.

Any chance this mod would eventually work for other aircraft? Right now it only works for the Ka-50 and UH-1H for me (I don't have the A-10C). It would be awesome to eventually be able to use it for all aircraft if we wanted, even ones like the MiG-21 or the Su-27, anything that has A2G capability.

  13. very generous offer. I've always been intimidated by the complexity of the A-10C sim, but it's definitely been on my eye since I started playing DCS. Count me in I guess. This community is awesome!

  14. I started out playing this game with Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2. I'd fully recommend getting FC3. It gives you the F-15C, an awesome a2a fighter with a detailed radar and nice flight model. You get the awesome Su-27, Su-33, and MiG-29, which are very fun flight models, great a2a, with a bit of a2g possible. There's the supremely fun Su-25 which is one of my favorites to fly. It's simple and basic and just has a great feel to it. Then you get the A-10A, which is basically a way to get some BRRRTTT in without the amount of time investment you'd need to learn DCS A-10C.

Don't bother wasting money on buying he F-15 and Su-27 separately. You can buy FC3 when it goes on sale for the same price as those two modules at full price. And the aircraft there are still getting updates, with the F-15 and Su-27 recent improvements to flight models, the new 3d cockpit for the mig29, etc. FC3 aircraft will only get better.

  15. Motion blur is a movie effect that is a result of objects travelling too fast to be captured crisply on the film according to the shutter speed of the camera. I've seen jets tearing by at maybe 100ft and 600 knots and it didn't look blurry to me, and I have crappy eyes. I mean, if I wasn't looking at the jet and it was in my peripheral vision, I guess it would be blurry. But simulating peripheral vision on a monitor is silly. It will happen naturally as my eyes move from looking at one part of the screen to another. There's nothing more silly than playing a game with too much motion blur and then you're staring out your canopy watching a jet fly by, tracking it, and it's a blurry smudge. That's not realistic.

Sure, implement it as an option for film makers and screenshot-takers. But please please please allow the option to totally disable it, just like DoF

  16. Went from 50fps with high/medium settings to getting 80+fps flying in the blank North-East corner of the map. Went from 30 to 70 in the F-15 Intercept Instant Action Mission.

Well done ED. I look forward to the full non-beta releases of 1.5 and 2. It's awesome to see a game actually get significantly better performance with an update like this.

  17. it's cold where I live, there's no roots or bark that I can even eat lol

I'm kicking myself for missing it on sale for that Winter Sale thing. grrrr.

Oh well. Thanks for the reply Cobra. I'll be enjoying your module eventually ;)

  18. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

We have opted out of the existing coupon system as we are not affiliated with Eagle's partners in providing DCS coupons.

    ouch.....

guess I'll be waiting until the next sale or whatever then.

edit: I don't mean to say anything bad about the module. It is totally worth the 50 bucks, and I wish I had the 50 bucks, but university students don't usually have 50 bucks :P

  19. I don't believe the TrackIR coupons apply to anything anymore actually, but in either case being a third party module the MiG-21 isn't in the whole bonus deal anyway.

the coupon specifically states that it's unlimited time.

And other third party addons have coupons enabled. I can even buy the brand new MiG-15 released what, yesterday? using a coupon. It works.

  20. So I was all ready to finally use my TrackIR coupon to buy the MiG-21 after seeing how awesome it was, and then I found that my coupon does not apply to the MiG-21. No coupons apply to it, apparently. What's the reason for this? The MiG-21 was just on sale during that winter sale event thing so it's not like it's some policy that it's too new to be discounted, but I missed it then.

Very disappointed by this. Was looking forward to trying it out today.
