SOLVED... for anyone else that has this problem - the f18 has its own views which must be assigned from within the f18 profile - these override whatever is set in the general tab. Once I set my buttons to the aircraft tab (f18 in this case), everything worked as expected.

Thanks, I figured it out... didn't have the ALE selected in the EW page... doh!
