Thanks for the replies and sorry for my delayed response.
I think I have an understanding of circumstance now.
I believe the large flashing X in the HUD is indicating that the laser is not seeing the target (in my case I believe it was due to cloud cover interference although it seemed I was flying below the cloud bases) and in which case the GB24 releases on pilot command - this makes sense.
