JudgeOrlok Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I finally got around to purchasing FC3 after ED removed the LOMAC installation requirement, and I've been screwing around with the different BVR weapons available to the F-15 and Su-27. In game, flying at 25000 feet (and launching at similar speeds of around 600 knots), the R-27ER appears to get up to Mach 3.8, while the AIM-7 only reaches Mach 2.5, giving the Russian fighters a huge advantage. Wikipedia, however, suggests that the AIM-7C and onward reach Mach 4. Why the discrepancy? Is the AIM-7 really that much slower than the Russian equivalent - and, if so, how did the military expect to win a confrontation during the cold war with them?
GGTharos Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Missiles are WIP. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Exorcet Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 What GG said. Also, some patches back the AIM-7 was by far less draggy than the ER which actually allowed it to perform rather well against maneuvering targets. I have not used the AIM-7 in recent patches so I don't know where it stands now. As far as AI goes, the R-27ER is a strong missile. Su-27's are fairing better than R-77 equipped MiG's and AIM-120 equipped western fighters. JudgeOrlok Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 Okay, thanks fellas. The ER doesn't seem to be too much trouble, even with the speed advantage - it's the ET that scares me!
