Agiel7 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 With the Malaysian airlines tragedy and the difficulty of searching that much ocean for any sign of the crash, I wondered how useful something like JSTARS would be for locating the crash. I suppose some debris might be too difficult to pick out amongst the waves on the open sea which is why it hasn't been tried as a silver bullet for this kind of situation.
dumgrunt Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 i reckon the p-3s with its sensor suite is more appropriate. very very fishy story. someone on that plane had ulterior motives.... on flight path just at ATC changeover then the transponder gets switched off, nearly turns back on its own bearing and drops altitude... i wouldnt be surprised if its on a strip somewhere. or maybe an Ethiopian Airlines type scenario, hijackers demand some bullshit destination, but i doubt the later as who ever did this knew what they were doing. OutOnTheOP Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 The JSTARS radar, while capable of doing radar mapping, is really configured more to detect moving targets. It would probably "pay more attention" to the moving waves than (relatively) stationary debris. The new P-3 Orion with the updated sensors (LSIP is the acronym that comes immediately to mind, but I don't remember exactly... it's littoral sensor something, if I remember right) would be more appropriate: it has a sea-configured SAR as well as an electro-optical sensor ball. *edit* nope, LSRS: Littoral Surveillance Radar System.
