stray cat Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 How to find the enemy in a F-86. What options are there to play "hardcore" without looking at the F10 map? How would a real pilot have done it? Get led to the area by some ground radar showing the way? Can a F86 use AWACS? I put an AWACS plane into the mission editor but I cant call it.
Vedexent Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 I've got a public Sabre map/server up, with AWACs. You can't call AWACs, but AWACs will make BRA calls to you if you're tuned into the correct frequency.
streakeagle Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 How did real pilots do it? They flew scheduled patrol routes and kept their eyes open. At the high altitudes employed in Korea, they might see contrails or the glint of the sun on the canopies and/or polished metal finishes. Years later, in Vietnam, this approach failed and the F-100 Super Sabres using this visual only combat patrol were immediately replaced by then new F-4C Phantoms with radars supplemented by limited AWACs and GCS support. What is a realistic range to spot another plane of this size visually? Ingame objects do not seem to draw very far unless I zoom in really far. Robin_Hood Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Pretty much everyone has trouble seeing other aircrafts, and there has been a lot of debate over whether this is realistic or not. As for being unable to call the AWACS, I hope this is on the bug list, because there is no logical reason why it shouldn't work (and the fact that AWACS didn't exist when the Sabre was in service is not a reason). 2nd French Fighter Squadron

You think historic context is not relevant then? Many would disagree. However, as a cheat, I don't see why we shouldn't be able to use AWACS. But I expect most multiplayer servers will stop you from using cheats. Remember of course that the F-86 is still beta, so there will be a lot of facilities added along the way with any luck.

What is the historical context? We're not in 1950's Korea, not in DCS. Putting limits from 1950's Korea should be a mission editor option, but not a hardcoded setting. That's just limiting and in many cases unrealistic.
