Hi F86 simmers out there,

I'm getting familiar with this awesome bird. I managed to drop bomb (automatically and manually). But one thing I don't understand about firing rocket and need to be enlighted.

according to the manual, to fire rocket you have to switch Sight Mechanical Cage to the right (uncaged), then hold the Electronic Cage button on the throttle on the dive for few seconds, then release and keep the pipper on target and fire. But how do I know when to start firing ? because there's nothing tell me to start firing (as a light on the Su-25A, it'll be lighted, steady to tell me target is on range). All I see in the F86 during diving is a red light beeping like crazy on the left.

P/s: how does the Rocket Dep. Angle affect firing solution ?

plz don't mind my bad English.

AFAIK theres no "help", you need to get a feeling for the rockets. Its like firing the gun manually and for both, the rocket and the gun, you need to be pretty near to the enemy.

The more you're diving the easier it is to hit with the rockets because then the gravity force (which is dragging the rocket down) vector is nearly the same as its current flight path.

But keep in mind that rockets can't be fired effective at a great distance and they are not used to be very accurate. If you're attacking a big group of infantry or a big facility you can use rockets to make more damage because there its easy to hit something. Use the rockets about then when you would use the gun and get a feeling of it.

Yeah, I've done a few testing, and while the manuals say 17 mil is pretty good for rockets firing, I have had much better results around 40 mils. Of course, if you have a shallow dive angle (like 30°) rockets will tend to hit short, and if you have a steep dive angle (45°, 60°) they may hit long.

It is very much a matter of:

- finding a setting good enough for certain conditions

- adjusting your aim for differing conditions, and I would say

- firing a long string of rockets that hopefully will hit the target at some point

Remember of course, that as has been said, rockets are not precise at all - but so are bombs. This is certainely not the precision strike era :joystick:

A problem induced by DCS not being ARMA III or real life, is that (for example in MP) we are always looking for that text saying we destroyed a particular vehicle or even soldier.

In aircraft from this era an attack should be considered successful if you are able to hit an area the size of a soccer field with one out of several rockets, suppressing and maybe even damaging the enemy, all while bugging out at a safe altitude and maintaining situational awareness.

But we tend to forget that after sniping cans with GBU-12 from 15 000 feet in the A-10.

Edit: removed most of the old message..

The A-4 sight system is pretty similar for all cases:

guns, unguided bombs, rockets and GAR-8 air-to-air missiles.

In some cases it does not help much but that's how it was then..
