stray cat Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 A few questions about the SU-27 detection systems. 1. Radar Assuming we look at the plane from a side view: - The start point is the plane's radar - The end point, horizontal line, called x, has the length of the estimated range - The vertical line called y, has the length estimated elevation - The vector adding x + y is the diagonal from start to the endpoint which is where the radar is pointing at. Is this correct? 2. Is the beam cone of the radar always a cone of 10 degrees no matter where it points at? 3. EO mode, how does it work? The range scale in the center, always says 10, but I was able to detect a large plane on 160 km using it. Also what is its use in combat?
Zabuzard Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 (edited) 1. You're pretty near to the solution. The start point is indeed the plane's radar and it will use your entered data of the estimated enemy position to concentrate the radar waves to that position but it just concentrates it onto that position, it also scans the rest. To make it short and not so complicated, more or less you're right but you'll also find enemies on other positions than your estimated. 2. Su-27 in FC3 uses a 4bar scan, every bar is 2.5° -> 10° in total. There are some threads around here that cover the radar in detail (first one I've found is an older one: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=54965&page=2) 3. You can use the EOS (Electric Optical System, located at the front of your canopy windshield) instead of your Radar to search enemies. You can operate it the same way you've operated the radar. The difference is that the EOS will not send out radar waves which will be detected by enemies RWR (Radar Warning Receiver) to search enemies, it just looks after heat signatures (like a thermographic camera). You'll propably guess it, the EOS is not as strong as the Radar but it will not reveal yourself to the enemy and you can do a stealth attack using the EOS and the R-27 ET (Extended Thermal Medium Range Missile). Your enemy will fly straight ahead not thinking about combat and Boom, Splash. There are of course more situations where the EOS is handy but I think you get the advantages and disadvantages of it :) Edited September 12, 2014 by Zabuza
