Autopilot trimming

I'm wondering about the autopilot and trimming. It seems as if the autopilot does not touch the trim. The most obvious situation is in descent or climb. You set your trim and get stable. Then you activate attitude hold. As you descend/climb, your air speed is bound to change. And when you disconnect the autopilot, the aircraft pitches up/down (relatively) violently, as the aircraft returns to the trim setting that was set prior to the autopilot being activated.

 

Is this the intended behavior?
