I'm curious to know if attacking a camp, which is covered for example by manpadded sams or low range IR sams, taking advantage of darkness may improve the survibilty factor or men and machines are in no way affected by a black pitch night.

cheers

Just guessing, but wouldn't IR sources be easier for IR SAMs to find against the relative coolness of nighttime

It may, but in order to do that, I suppose you need to aim toward the fighter, but unless you have a specific gear you shouldn't know the fighterplane whereabouts or where it's coming from.

Just a guess

My guess back:

First pass - unless he's supersonic your ears & a cheap video camera set to nightshot would just about do it - assuming you're a terrorist & can't afford a set of Night Vision Goggles which I think are standard issue to US troops now. (my old video camera can see a hotplate below red heat in the dark, so I guess it would see engine exhaust nozzles as a heat source)

Second pass you know pretty well where he is.

If he is supersonic I suspect your chances of engaging him are low anyway.

Cheers.
